Things would be a tad more boring without you here, Imran, to wreak havoc on Apolyton.

Now that I trapped you on this thread, you gotta express your opinion on this news.

Does this mean that we can finally dismantle the archaic organization now that its primary reason for existance has been rendered moot?

DinoDoc, I'm sure NATO is capable of dynamic existence with the change in the international arena.

It has been looking for a reason to exist since the fall of the USSR and hasn"t found one yet and has only succeeded in making a mess of the Balkans.

                  two words:

                  terrorism and rogue nations

                  (well ok --- four words)

This seems to be a good and a bad thing. Although it signifies the end of the Cold War, it seems to be another step towards the corporate republic...

A stunning change when you consider that less than 20 years ago we were this close (thumb and forefinger one inch apart) to real conflict between NATO and the eastern bloc in Europe.

One wonders what the purpose of NATO is if the Cold War is over. It was a defensive alliance. The whole thing is interesting. Those who are internationalists (think that growth of supernational structures is beneficial) will presumably be happy about this kind of thing and of the continuation of NATO as an active structure regardless of the lessened threat from Russia.

NATO needs to change its systemic, functional outlook now that Russia has joined.

Perhaps NATO can now become a more pro-active organization against terrorism and rogue nations.

But there is a good question:

at what point do you say that an organization no longer has purpose and should be dismantled, rather than reformed to a changing world??
