A stunning change when you consider that less than 20 years ago we were this close (thumb and forefinger one inch apart) to real conflict between NATO and the eastern bloc in Europe.

One wonders what the purpose of NATO is if the Cold War is over. It was a defensive alliance. The whole thing is interesting. Those who are internationalists (think that growth of supernational structures is beneficial) will presumably be happy about this kind of thing and of the continuation of NATO as an active structure regardless of the lessened threat from Russia.
