You're right. Instead of watching the songs being performed, use that time to learn a little about the history of Europe; it's rivalries and such. It makes the voting a far more enjoyable experience when you know why everyone votes the way they do.

Israel is in because they're members of the European Broadcasting Union which holds the contest.
I remember Israel winning so many times in the seventies they eventually had to enter an immensely bad song because they couldn't afford to host the contest any longer.
Pop singers across Europe got to know Tel Aviv quite well in those days. Many of them are now in Kibbutzes and haven't been heard from for years. So I guess it was good for something.Comment
