  • Tacking on more complex clauses to AA will not solve the problem. There simply isn't a need for it anymore, so I say get rid of it.

You sound like that soup Nazi from an old episode of Sienfiled --

      "No more AA for you!"

But perhaps this is an area where we can agree to disagree.

          You're from Iowa??

What part of Iowa? What city?

I am living in eastern Iowa, in Davenport, along the Mississippi River.

              OMG

I was born and raised in a small town called Holy Cross, 25 miles west of Dubuque!!
Dubuque is just a little over one hour north of Davenport.

So you have heard of the towns near Dubuque, such as Holy Cross, Farley, Epworth, and Peosta?

              • News to me. As far as I know, one major thing that was nice about Elizabeth was that she didn't hate Catholics; but being that the Pope said any Catholic who killed her would get a free ride into heaven, a reasonable number of Catholics were out to get her. But she only executed Catholics for treason, not merely the crime of being Catholic- loyal English Catholics suffered no persecution from her. As a result (this is a stat I heard), she killed fewer Catholics in her 40 years of rule then Bloody Mary killed Protestants in the last 3 and a half years of rule.

(shuffle shuffle) Hmm... all I can find on this is that there was an Irish revolt, and it was surpressed. No particular mention of religious motivations on the English side. Maybe I'll check more on it later.

Anyway, not sure what this all has to do with the original thread topic, but it's more interesting.
There was indeed an Irish revolt during Elizabeth's reign. The reason for the revolt was that Elizabeth's stooges thought the best way to "tame" Ireland was to starve its populace, so they went about the island destroying all of the crops.

No, I actually haven't been back to Dubuque since I was two. I'm more familiar with the area around Grinnell and Newton.

                      The United States of America.

My point was that racist hiring practices don't benefit corporations. That, in combination with a general shift in views on race in the US means that employers will seek out better qualified employees regardless of race. It isn't Utopian, it just makes sense.

This is a false point. Most jobs could be done be trained monkeys. Companies and corporations do not lose out by hiring someone less qualified most of the time. This is why racism in hiring has persisted long past its legal banning. As long as lesser qualified white men can do a job adequately, there is no "market" incentitive to hire better qualified minority and female applicants.

If you have any real world experience, you will know that more often than not, in getting a job it is not as important what you know as it is who you know. Hence the necessity of AA, to force corporations to accept highly qualified minority and female candidates in place of lesser qualfied white males.

The NAACP rarely brings frivolous suits. I can't think of any off the top of my head. When an organization does bring such a suit, there is ample evidence of wrong doing, enough to bring the suit, if not necessarily always enough to win. The EEOC can fine you if you break employment laws, but again, there has to be substantial evidence of wrong doing. This isn't to say that the system can't be abused, but if we abolished everything that could be abused, we'd have nothing.

Why do some people insist that just because there is exceptional abuse within a system, that it should be completely abolished, instead of a more reasonable approach -- systemic reform??

In other words, Chegitz, you have provided another excellent post.

                          • Chegitz, when there is a certain shortage of expertise in ethnic groups for some jobs that lead to them not being unable to actually fill their quota of jobs, should those jobs go to white people or remain open to the ethnic group until enough people from that group have become adequately trained?

                            Why/why not?

(Note that if for example, there is supposed to be 1 black policeman for every 2 white policemen, an unfilled vacancy for a black person will lead to the necessity to have 2 unfilled vacancies for white policemen, even if there are enough white policemen to fill the quota for whites).

                            • Stew, you're on my ignore list. However, I'll answer you this once.

There are no quotas. Therefore your question is has no point.

                              • Che, thanks for your response.

The British police force stipulates that a certain percentage of its officers need to come from ethnic minorities (somewhere around 5.5%, as this is the approximate percentage of ethnic minorities in the actual population).

They are having enormous trouble with labour shortages - not because there aren't enough potential policemen, but because there aren't enough suitable ethnic minority candidates applying.

Since the ratio of ethnic to white police officers needs to be around 1:19, the shortages in labour amongst ethnic minorities are magnified.
