Well, I don't think we should simply be subsidizing 'black schools'. Rather the money should to go inner city or poor schools. A majority of the students may be black in that school, but the focus should be on helping the poor, not any single race.
Exactly right, and this is where affirmative action, in its current incarnation, hurts all minorities in the long run. Institutions like to trumpet how "diverse" they are in that they pick and choose on the basis of race/ethnicity. But it's those in the lower socio-economic tiers, regardless of race, that are denied the opportunity to prove themselves. It's a fatally flawed policy.

I never knew anyone who got free college credits except for AP testing. I did know several Black students who were discriminated against by their professors.

Fun, victims are individuals. We should be color blind in hiring. Rather than saying, well this fellow's race has had it hard and this other guy's race has had it good, so I will just shaft the one and help the other. They are individuals, Fun. Unless you want a Balkanized world of people competing for victim status, the whole thing is silly.

David James, you are an idiot.

"You know, this is silly. The Irish were only "persecuted" (and I use the term with a lot of reservation)"

Cromwell massacaring the Irish doesn't merit the term persecution!?

"after the Reformation when they continued to support Catholic Pretenders to the English (and later British) throne."

My, you have an ignorance of history.

Persecution of the Irish dates back to the Middle Ages, where it was not considered murder to kill an Irishman. But of course the most Notorious persecutor of the Irish people came before the support of the main support of the pretenders to the Throne- Charles I and Charles II were both protestant. And I think you can hardly blame the Irish for supporting the house of Stuart considering how their liberties were being denied. Persecution of the Irish continued well after the threat of Catholic pretenders had ended into the 20th century. Discrimination against the Irish occured in the United State as well where there was no threat of Catholic pretenders.

" If anything, the rest of the world owes Protestant Northern Europeans a load of thanks for showing the world that human liberty is possible, for the fight against Catholic persecution later turned into a fight for civil liberties."

Bull****. By the Way, David, did you know that the Irish parliament had passed a law during the the English civil war proclaiming that it was the law of the land that no man should be persecuted on account of religion? Soon after Cromwell would arrive, who would proclaim that "if by freedom you mean the freedom to celebrate the mass, this we do not permit". Not to mention how when predominantly Protestant United States took Texas and Mexico slavey was extended there soon after.

                    • What you see as cramming ideologies down people's throats, I call legitimate advocacy and protest.
Cramming ideology down people's throats = Showing videos in public schools depicting homosexuality. School is for learning and education, not a political agenda. Sexuality, especially, is for parents to teach their kids about, not the government/nanny.

Valid advocacy = Lobbying state and federal governments to change laws

Cramming ideology down people's throats = Suing schools or states for not adequately presenting homosexuality in the classroom

Valid advocacy = Peaceful demostrations, handing out flyers to consenting adults

                      See the difference?

I actually happen to agree. Without the Reformation, I don't think you'd have a Voltaire or Locke.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

                              • While AA is imperfect at best, there are times when it can be taken far too far

                                1. A Canadian university had a lecturer position/ fellowship grant available that a white male doctoral student applied for. He was actually interviewed and later found out that the money for that position was "deferred". Upon inquiring he was informed that he was the best candidate but that a new policy was in place and the position would be held "open" until a qualified female candidate applied ( it was still open 3 years later) .

                                2. A teacher's college announced ( in 1993) that in the interest of attaining a faculty mirroring societal demographics, they would freeze all hiring of men until women had attained 52% of faculty positions. It was projected that this would occurr sometime between 2005 and 2008.

Things like this go too far IMHO. Example 1 changed the career path of the individual as he found it impossible to continue. Example 2 crippled the career aspirations of any man who wanted to work at the particular college.

The problem I have with many of these programs is their focus. The white men that are most hurt are the young white men while the older men in high positions continue unaffected. Its ironic that most of these programs do little or nothing for the older people who faced far more discrimination than people today ( I'm not saying discrimination is ended . . . just that it is better than it was)

Instead the programs seem designed to help young people sometimes have faced no discrimination. Don't get me started on the blond-haired blue eyed daughter of a doctor who had her entire university cost paid because she was in a minority program . .

I have seen some alarming statistics regarding young men that are graduating from high school less and attending university less than women. So do women really need a helping hand that much ??

I work in law . At law school, women make up just over half of students. In the firms, the proportion of women decreases as senority increases. This is a reflection of the realities of 20 yearss ago but has the impact that the average women's salary is less than a man's for the simple reason that the average experience level is much higher for men. Women still do face some discrimination in the workplace but there are no barriers to a woman lawyer attaining whatever they want. To claim there is a problem because there are fewer female partners is disingenuous at best. The fix has already been done in the schools and the entry level positions and it is only a matter of time until this percolates through to all levels.
