I know. I still feel the nostalgy of the World Cup 1986 each time a World Cup closes in. And I still generally those teams I liked back then, when I was first time watching the World Cup.
Anyone remember France-Brazil, quarterfinals 1986? What a great game!

Serb: Very interesting how Belgium could be a group winner, if you gave to Belgium less points then you gave to Russia?

I thought it was France-Brazil in 1982 Brazil won by penalty kicks. The French defender missed at the end.

Brazil drew 1-1 with France in the Q/finals 1986. France then won the penalty shoot-out 4-3.

France never played Brazil in 1982, and there were no Q/finals either.

Ok what game did the the french lose in penalty shots where the defender missed (last name started with an A). I distinctly remember him sinking to his knees with that distraught look.

I may be mixing an 82 Italy-Brazil game. The brazil team had Socrates, Junior (I think), Zico. They were brilliant but were beaten by an underdog. I was thinking it was France but now I'm thinking it was Italy.

Germany-France. Was it the game where Battiston broke some vertebrae when Schumacher just went flying for the man instead of the ball. It was the worst foul I have EVER seen, yet he didn't even get a caution.

Manual Amoros is the guy you are thinking of.

Yes, it was Germany-France. My all-time favorite game is from that WC, Italy-Brazil. Brazil had an extraordinary team (imho the best one of the post-Pele era, by far) but that particular day Paolo Rossi had been touched by God.
