    INTERVIEW WITH SAM RAIMI

And, as you'll see in the film, some very distinct things were added in light of September 11. "Well, I was devastated by September 11th and I didn't know anybody in the buildings. I was moved like every other American when I watched the real heroes go in there and help those people in the tragedy at the attack site risk their lives and many times lose their lives. So, in the storyboards I had always had in the idea - it wasn't in the script. Some ideas come from myself and the artist - after Spider-Man has been misunderstood by the New Yorkers throughout the course of the whole movie, he does nothing but risk his life for them, I wanted a small group to appreciate him because I thought it would give him back something. I had put in before September 11th a bunch of New Yorkers seeing what Spider-Man was doing risking his life to save these kids and helping him a little. I thought that would be cool. I wanted the audience to go, 'Finally, somebody appreciates this guy. If not the whole city, somebody.' Then there was September 11th and I decided to add and slightly change their dialogue because I really wanted it to be a tip of the hat to those brave rescue workers who risked their lives to be heroes."

And one of the most talked about scenes, already, is Spidey sitting on the pole with the American flag. "Yes, I put the American flag in after September 11th, but I've always been a big American and I think I would have had that flag in anyway. It didn't come out of how can I put the flag in? It came out of where is he going to land? How about a building top at the end? Yeah, land at the building top. What'll be there, a spider? Oh, I'll put a flag there, yeah. Yeah, Spidey and the flag, he really is a great American or represents a great American who's not real."
There you have it. Take it as you will.

What's the big deal a country's flag is just a symbol and as everyone should know symbols only matter to simple minds.

Eh, I'm with Markos here. The movie didn't have a patriotic theme, and then they toss the flag in there as if they were proving a point or something...I didn't like it.

It would've been different if the movie was patriotic throughout.

I think UberKrux was right (although reported in a slightly coloured way ) - that because so much of the movie (nearly the whole damn thing) had to be redone because of WTC sensitivities, perhaps in the final product it was thought that a slight show of support should be shown. Although the movie hasn't made NZ yet, I would like to see that American flag at the end NOT as anything to do with supprt for the US, UN etc, but for the thousands of citizens from MANY coutnries who died Sept 11 - the only reason it was an American flag was that the event was in NY.

                  I hope it's not OTT - but I wouldn't have a problem with that.

PS anyone seen the original trailer? - I think it was kinda cool, and a real shame they decided to pull it.

Btw., I've heard somewhere that in early post war movies the "evil russians" still talked with a somewhat german accent because the german accent was so equivalent to "evil" in many american minds. Does this hold true or is it a myth?

if someone wants to honor those who died in 9/11 then he should do a movie about it.

so i suppose that you would find understandable to see the french flag in the end of the next amelie-like movie as a support to the freedom-loving/le pen hating people of france....

i dont need an american flag to be reminded that spiderman is an american. i knew that already before even seeing the movie. but then we're talking about the director who puts his hero to say his tagline 3 (three) times so that we can really really really get the message...

The problem is not about patriotism, the problem is about how Americans always find the most ridiculous way to show it.
The "American flag ending" is becoming such a cliché that it practically became an old tag to designate unproper show of chauvinism here
