      Why is France so problematic?

Those EVIL french farmers always appear in the TV burning or sacking some truck with imported food or something.

In this chase it's 'cause France in many ways still is a rural country with a large group of people directly or indirectly living of the land. That's unlike most of the other countries in the EU.

There was a Wall Street Journal editorial on this yesterday.

Apparently Bush is supposed to be gettgin some tradeoffs to support other free trade initiatives in exchange for these actions. But the article said that he may not actually get what he wanted. I think he would be better off sticking ot a hard core free trade policy.

I agree. Daschle should be sucking Bush's cheney over this one. It's the least he could do.

This bill really irks me. It's not in our best interests. The irony is that most of this money will end up in the pockets of the big Euro agrochemical companies.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                              I sure am surprised.

Speaking of protectionism, Congress is reauthorizing the Ex-Im Bank right now (at least they were doing so a couple days ago).
