Of course, the International Security oficers would be accompanied by the Palestinian Police, so the Hamas members would have to kill their nationals, too. What do you think that would do to their popular support?

                So, a centrist libertarian?

Anyway, there is a pretty good editorial in the WashPost today re: criticism of Israel doesn't equal anti-semitism: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2002Apr29.html

                  • Krazyhorse, those people are governed by Israeli law, so it's totally unreasonable to demand that they act in accordance with PA law instead. Even Palestinians in the territories followed Israeli law before the PA was set up; I don't think they're "border guards for the settlements."

                    • that USS Liberty incident has got me wondering... If so , then why? why would Israel bomb an American ship on purpose? I think it is possible , but I don't see a reason for it to happen.

what the theorists , probably with the background of WTFHermans say , is that Israel was slaughtering Egyptian POWs. if so, why wouldn't Egypt protest? sure some would escape , and tell Egypt about the horror.

                      • I agree that this is the weakest part of the Liberty conspiracy theory.*

I have found it chilling to be on boards where Isr. told me that "we deserved the Liberty bombing"...

*alternate rationale I've heard regards the Golan Hieght campaign. (US gummed the works up in 56 during Suez operation...analogous concern here.)

                        • I rather doubt it, esp. when the US has lost all hope of securing arab support whatsoever.

So , again, any other reason to bomb our supporting superpower, albeit not too friendly to us , at the time?
                          no motive?

                          .

I am waiting esp. to DinoDoc, since he apparently believes we should burn in hell for this.

I think the general position about this in Israel , ( if one exists , since public has short-term memory ) , is , basically "oops.".
just like you and those canadian troops.

                          • Dalgetti, I already conceded that this is the weakest part of the conspiracy theory.

What would be the reaction in Isr. if it came to light that the attack was deliberate? Just curious.

I can give you several theories I've seen floated about as the reason for the attack. But, truth be told, I don't know the reason for the attack.

I don't think that Israel should burn in hell for this. I actually like the country. I think that the US should have retaliated for the attack though.

However, what I do know is that the excuse that you mistook it for an Arab ship is demonstrably false.

                              • I'm with Dal on this one. As an American, I'd be really pissed off if it came to light that the Israelis deliberately attacked the Liberty. However, I've never seen any convincing evidence for that theory. This lack of evidence, combined with the absence of any convincing Israeli motive for the attack makes me assume that it really was an accident. I'd love to have it cleared up once and for all, but I don't think that's going to happen.
