A couple of my friends in high school were obsessed with that game. I, on the other hand, thought it was stupid... hmmmm.... and still do .
To us, it is the BEAST.

Decent enough game - just find ways of playing for free. Like the current open beta of M:tG - Online, or the old M:tG computer game, or Apprentice.

And I tend to go white/black creature decks.

when it takes away from board gaming it is

if however you are too tired to do real gaming, or you are waiting for a player

it can be a decent time waster

It's good for a few quite games, or when your brain is too fried for anything else. We used to play Illuminati or something silly like that during those wee hours of the morning, but I reckon M:tG is just as good if it doesn't suck up so much money.

Anyway, seems like the new tournament rules kill off a lot of popular decks people love. Heck, even Mind Twist is now illegal IIRC.

I used to have a white/blue control deck that just drives people crazy

I have to admit, I'm pants at creating decks. If I posted my electronic card holdings here, could people suggest possible decks for me?

Sure, I've played Magic. Unfortunately, I didn't care much for deck constructing, so I mostly lost. Still, I've got a fair number of cards. Nowadays? Now I play the Babylon 5 CCG....

One of my favorites. I still have a handful of theme decks I created when I used to play a lot, but have been slowly selling off my cards. Sadly, yes...most of the decks I built as the game evolved are now illegal....some of my favorites tho are:

The wee beasties deck - Red green, constructed during the Revised (third edition) period - Dual Lands and Kird Apes...a fist-ful of cheap green critters, backed up with Giant Growths, Blood Lust, Lightning Bolts (and later Incinerates, too - Ice Age), 4 Howling Mines for speed and a Zuran Orb/Feldon's Kane for Longevity. Vicious. If even one critter makes it through on any attack, it's good night Princess.

The deck everyone hated - Rack 'em....pure black, pure card denial. 4 howlers for speed (mind twist, hymn to tourach, hippy spook and that other card-stripping flying critter, anti-critter cards (terror), and speed cards (dark ritual) to round it all out. Hopeless to play against decks like that tho, all they do is really irritate your opponent.

The Good Guy Deck: White weenie - mostly first strikers with a few banding units tossed in. Enough healing and preservation cards to keep 'em alive long enough for the kill. Sweet deck that could be run on all of four mana (and that's COUNTING mana for fast effects on the other guy's turn!).

What's yours is Mine: Black Blue deck that was all about counter spellin', killin' critters and animating them later and/or controlling them away and beatin' the ever-living hell out of your opponent with his own stuff. A little slower than the Rack Deck, but every bit as annoying. Featured Feldon's Cane and Skull of Orm to keep reviving all those enchantments....

A few others, but those were always my favorites to play...had a sweet pair of infinite recursion decks that you could play forever and simply run your opponent outta cards...now THOSE are annoying...lol

I played a Guardian Beast, Alladin, artifact deck one time... annoyed the living **** out of my opponent and beat him down...

Played for a couple years and just loooved blue/white control while I didn't fancy black or red that much... but the only great deck I ever managed to build, and the only deck that actually won significantly more than it lost was a pure black discard thingy which was mostly done for fun. It's a cruel world.

Hmm, I appear to have 2700 virual cards - let's not copy all that down. Any tips on how to reduce the number under consideration would be appreciated, MtG Online has a nice filtering system.

I used to play Magic a bit in the days before the Tempest expansion. I had a red green deck that I loved both for it's effectiveness and because the colors looked pretty. Basically it used a bunch of small critters to overwhelm the defense. Plus direct damage to finish em off. It wasn't real fancy, but it wasn't expensive to build either. I had a white weenie that owned my friends' decks too but I got rid of it because it was basically too straightforward and easy.
