An ordinary, store-bought Porsche Carrera will do 174 mph on its 296-hp engine. Bavarian tuner Alois Ruf (who is technically considered by the U.S. Department of Transportation to be a manufacturer) adds another 300 hp to the engine with brutal twin turbochargers, wild cams, advanced ignition timing, and a variety of other internal tweaks, to create the entirely road-legal, emissions-qualified Ruf Porsche CTR 2 Sport, which has been clocked at over 217 mph.

There are race cars that will equal and exceed that number, but none that'll do it in as civilized and tractable a way as will a Ruf. "I'd drive it on the track at 190 all day long and then drive it home on the highway as though it was nothing special," marvels Los Angeles Ruf CTR 2 owner David Tunkl. "I'd had Ferraris, Porsche Turbos, and a Lamborghini Diablo, but the explosion of acceleration in a Ruf is something I never get used to. When the turbos kick in at around 3,000 rpm, it sounds like a Learjet behind you. You hear this incredible whistling and feel just like you're on a runway." The CTR 2 is based on the last-generation air-cooled Turbo, but Ruf is already working his wonders on the new water-cooled Porsche engine to create the CTR 3 Starting prices of $258,000 for a complete CTR 2, including customer paint and trim specifications, and $360,000 for a CTR 2 Sport. I have only driven four cars. Opel when I was learning how to drive, and three Volvos. Opel Astra, Volvo 144, Volvo 740 and Volvo 940. The coolest was the Volvo 144.... Like in this picture, but it has a nice yellow color...
