if you want to move out of a country you can easily do so.
Not quite correct for a great many people around the world.

    Including the Montagnards.

I respectfully beg to differ - I know cause I've been there - the hill tribes are an exception and move relatively freely around the region between China, Burma, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. If they want to go, they can go across the mountains - there is noone to stop them

Then you don't get reliable news in Australia. :-P~~

There is a current joint effort between the US and UN to relocate many of them right here in NC.

Seems to be a little difficulty in the NV gov't in letting them go from those "free to move about" refugee camps.

Why? Most of them were drafted and were had no choice but to go there. What about guys like Al Gore who spent their time behind the front lines.

I don't think they should be hated as a group, but to treat them all as heros undermines the very concept of heroism. A hero is someone who does something by choice, someone who rises above the norm. Getting draft and ending up in the frontlines of Vietnam does not in itself qualify for heroism. Serving as a supply clerk in Saigon definitely does not.

Oh - if they are in camps then that is different

There's a group in a similar plight on the Thai Lao border.

Vietnam is just cool. Or at least what I gathered from Rambo 2. Of course that was set in the 1980's, but not much has changed

There are groups of people in similar plight, all over the world.

                Thus my original... bigger question.

Well, thats it for me for awhile here in this thread anyway.

Sorry to stir up stuff and then not be around to either debate or talk about it.

I am hit and miss with the computer and the net.... thus I don't get in too many serious threads.

I may have time tommorrow night

                Again, my apologies.

You mean that Hollywood still make a bullsh!t movies like Rambo 2?
Only Rambo 3 can compare with Rambo 2 in stupidness.

aww shucks. you're just saying that because Rambo singlehandedly took out all the nifty Russian hardware. Or am I thinking of the second one? I really can't remember the third one very much.

                    • Sure. He did it in both second and third parts. Bullsh!t movies, one jerk exterminate whole divisions of silly soldiers who love to dance when struck by bullet. Rambo 2 and Rambo 3 is the same bullsh!t as Commando. Hot Heads with Charlie Sheen was a nice satire about movies like Rambo 2, 3.

Rambo 1 was much, much better.

                      • Oh I see. Revionism is ok only when its liberal....like what they did/doing to the founder fathers in urban area's. Totally destroying and re-writing history. Well, Vietnam was a great victory! We got peace, we/SVA held the NVA back 6 times since 65. And N. Vietnam made a promise not to invade again. Of course when we left, they did anyway.

This is not as simple as it sounds. Several questions instantly pop up:

                              1. How can we tell if the right to self-determination for a people is abused?
                              2. What does "better position" mean? What does it entail?
                              2a. "Better postion" in what?
                              3. What kind of help?

It's a fair question. I think people in a better position have an obligation to help those in need. In the particular case of Vietnam, that would have meant not propping up a government that was voted out of office and was despised by the vast majority of its people. Had the US not invaded the South, the National Liberation Front would have taken control of the country in the mid-'60s. When the first advisors went to South Vietnam, the NLF was on the verge of declaring a provisional government.
