I hug. If it's an absolute stranger, I'll shake hands. But for friends (male/female), I hug. None of this patting on the back stuff either.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
    -Richard Dawkins

I shakes hands with new acquaintences, hug my gay friends, kiss my wife and the lesbian shopkeeper, tip the waitress and barkeep, smile at the tiny tots, give some food to the homeless guy, rolleyes at the train that is late again, and cheer for random sports teams. I think I need to write that down so I'll remember as I get older and lose a brain cell or two.

Nod-Just walking past someone in the hall or street

Shake-if I'm being introduced for the first time to male or female

          Hug-if I meet a girl that I know well

Hug and Kiss on cheeck-For my close friends that are females

Note: Some women insist on hugging the first time you meet. I don't pull away.

And yes there are those guys, usually older men, that insist on the shake and pat on back.

You have to be careful about hugging and kissing girls. I never had a problem with a girlfriend hugging a guy she has known and was friends with, but some guys freak out when their girl does this. Especially the real friendly girls

I just tend to nod and mumble "alright?".

                What's the point in formality.

It depends on the person. Mostly shake hands with acquaintances and strangers and hug close friends some people don't really do hugging though so they might just get a handshake or nothing. That's pretty much the same for both sexes.

I was introduced in the union to a girl once by a female friend, and she held out her hand for me to shake, but her palm was directly facing the ground.

                        I was like, hmmm....stuck-up ******
