I assure you I'm not joking. I got away with acting that way because I also did a really, really good job, and I have a standing offer for me to come back and work on any school breakFollow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/DaveDaDouche

Once a customer was getting rowdy and starting to insult me and physically moved closer and such, so I said something like "Get the **** out of my face, if you touch me I'll beat the **** out of you."
This other time some Russian tourist called a friend of mine at work a "capitalist pig", so my friend started tearing into Russia and we all laughed at the guy.
My friend who still works there said a lady came in and started *****ing about someone named David (obviously me) - they all got a good laugh out of that.Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/DaveDaDouche

I'm quite sure she would have understood you if she didn't really want to steal your pen. (Or was there any reason to believe that it is an advertising gift?)
Antoehrt ype of hated customer: people who give me a saliva sample with their money. Don't put your god-damn money in your mouth then hand it to me... I had one woman do this with her cards, and I made it pretty clear when I took the money that I wasn't going to touch the bit that had been in her mouth (most of it), and she told me, "It's okay, it's not like I have any disease!".

People can do whatever they want, but be ready to face the consequences.
It's a place to share funny stories, not read out morals.
Customer service is a subject which is taught and the commentaries in here show that there's a lack of knowledge of it.
I have taught it myself and this is probably why I'm writing what I do. Add that me and many ppl have bad experience with uneducated and rude young clerks (bimbos/bimbettes).
BTW, there's been a Jewish guy from Jerusalem visiting my church lately. Maybe you heard of him... Probably not.

There are stupid people on both sides of the fence.
As an employee in retail I've had my fair share of clueless and dumb customers, but I was always polite and understanding with them when I wanted to grab them and strangle them.
As a customer I've wanted to strangle the employees helping me. Particularly when I'm in a computer store and they come up and start telling me about why one product is better than another, and get everything so completely screwed up that I'm trying not to laugh at him."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

I was unionized in my retail job, so it's pretty hard for me to get fired. Then I left the union and became a nightshift supervisor for the summer and still didn't get fired (no customers! booyah!) for the same store.
I'm just naturally nice to people IRL. It's part of being Canadian."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Are you nice to Americans? I remember one clerk at a car rental at Vancouver Airport telling me Americans are stupid. He said that because when I rented the car in Los Angeles, California, they told me I needed the extra $25.00 "Mexican-insurance" in Canada as well.

I've lived in America for four years as well. Being from Alberta and all, we're quite fond of the little guys.
I'm nice to everyone I meet IRL until they personally cross me in some way or another. I can't tell apart Americans and Canadians. There's no real Canadian accent in Alberta..."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

It is unfair to mock about helpless/disorganised/stupid people, but I think it is possible to wait with laughing a few minutes - big grin meantime. In most cases one can take this from a humorous side.
OTOH, if a customer is unpolite/rude/about to steal I think a clerk (never been one myself) has the right to defend (as well a customer against rude... clerks). I don't think this ruins the reputation of a shop except for one person I personally wouldn't like to see shopping there anyway. In restaurants, you would certainly increase reputation by doing so, and the other guests will feel more comfortable than in the presence of someone who is constantly ranting.
If you crashed a tray (or something similar), you'll get a comment. If there are enough people it's absolutely sure that someone will comment. Live with it. If you've got a good/funny answer shoot back (in words). Most people who comment are waiting for that. Its a really nice game . If not, they are a...lright and deserve the treatment from the previous paragraph. Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

Technically we are, but we don't know each other that much.
Plus I'm from Haifa.
Unless that guy is famous.
