  • Should I Join a Fraternity?

Do y'all think I should join a fraternity? I have a lot of friends who are in them, and they say it's fun and I should join....I've been to frat parties and stuff, but I dunno.

What do y'all think and why?

I think you should, then you can tell us about the initiation.

It's kind of silly to ask an internet forum if you should or not-- it depends on the type of person you are.

From what I have heard, Fraternites do have very rough initiations, some of which have killed pledges. Some frats generally treat their pledges like dirt freshman year. They are often required to do many things- such as community service, sometime mandatory study hours- you will lose much of the independence college is supposed to be about. Still, it provides great partying oppurtunites, the oppurtunity to socialize, and it makes it easier to get sorority chicks.

BD, yeah those are some of my problems.

I wouldn't really consider it, except that as I said I have some friends in it, who have told me they don't do hazing and that they all loved it when the pledged, had some good times.

          So I dunno.

Well, no one fraternity is the same. I suggest looking up on fraternity hazing on the internet- you can see that it is alive and well in some frats. I reccomend doing a good deal of research into whatever specific frat you want to pledge at, seeing how they treat pledges and how they haze, as well as any stuff they force members to do. Then you can make your decision.

they've revoked two fraternity charters here at university of illinois in the last three years, both because of hazing. thing about a frat is, you don't get to choose your friends anymore, you are automatically friends with the people in your frat, and if you don't get along..

i saw two innitiations this year, both times in my large lecture for enviromental biology. One guy had to strip to his boxers to music and then flex his muscles while the prof yelled at him. the other one i saw was in the same class, the guy walked in and yelled if anyone ordered a pizza, he brought in a pizza and gave a slice to whoever raised their hands. all the while, he was videotaped by one of his frat brothers and the proffesor was yelling.

so my question to you is: can you keep your cool standing in your boxers in front of more than 600 people?

Live by my example. Refuse to join any fraternity so undescriminating as to offer one such as you a place.

I wouldn't join one, but then we don't have em over here (At least I don't think we do )

                      David,

I'm a Beta at Baylor, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Hazing isn't what it used to be (it's really be cracked down on) and it isn't anything to worry about. Granted, pledging will at times suck, but I promise you'll look back on it with fond memories. And plus, the increase in the amount of a$$ you get after you pledge is exponential

I despise the jock-centred social system that seems to operate in the US education system, and, rightly or otherwise, I'm going to lump the frats in with that. Horrid, preppy, egotistic, and just downright rotten. Sure, you get to **** the sorority chicks, and go to a few parties. Big deal. It's all fake; fake friendships, fake community, fake relationships.

I'm so glad that **** doesn't happen here.
