the S. vietnamese lost. it was their war not ours. We were only providing advisors

and you specifically said we lost in the battlefield. this was never the case. we won in the battlefield. But we lost the political battle back home. If those panzy peace niks hadn't forced Nixon to pull out, we could have kept fighting the NVA for another 40 years at least.

That is more true than false. The US did pretty well in the battlefield. After the US was pulled out of the country South Vietnam went under very quickly, indicating the US did very well in keeping South Vietnam non-communist.

        So much for strong leadership.

we have never lost a war, and are thus the greatest military power the world has ever seen.
        Neither has Liechtenstein.

Anyway, the objective of the US in the Vietnam war was to stop the spread of communism in Vietnam. The US failed, so they lost.

My history teacher some years ago already said many Americans were in denial about this, and it's clear that it's so.

So they win by the division by zero fault? Lets see who wins between the tiny country and the mighty US. Clearly we are more powerful than the other countries who haven't lost wars.

All of the rest of the "powers" faultered when they met substantial resistence. Greece from "within," Rome in several places...and the rest of the world is laughable. Vietnam was not substantial resistence by any means, but we did win WWII and steered WWI back on course, as well as putting down our bloodiest internal strife, and breaking out of the most powerful empire in the very beginning. No other nation or empire can say the same.

Don't get me started on how subservient the rest of the world is to us.

One, you're obviously skewing the objectives to meet your needs. There were actually several objectives, one of which was what you mentioned, which we nearly met. Communism did not spread until we left, and when it did spread, it had **** to work with due to the US's intervention. Additionally, communism did not spread outside of the Vietnam, one of the other objectives.

My history teacher some years ago already said many Americans were in denial about this, and it's clear that it's so.
Your history teacher was just confused. Also, some of my history teachers have said we won.

Dork. South Vietnam was communist to start out with. The US did a good job of keeping both sounds on track!

The south communistic? The south was a puppet regime of the US so they where certainly not communistic.

Most soldiers who fought there clear said that the US was completely losing that war and had no chance to win, that it was just one big insane mission.

Obviously I meant the people of South Vietnam. I believe the Viet Cong was actually the South Vietnamese fighting force, and the North was the Northern Alliance or something, even though nowadays people like to think we were helping someone over there, and fighting against the Viet Cong in the north.

I believe that is right, but that's probably because they really didn't have anything to fight for, and didn't see why they were there, or disagreed with the reasons they were there. They were definitely put in a frustrating position. I'd never have gone. (Poor guys came back to be called baby killers, too.)

You're right on this one. And lets not forget that most of the guys didn't want to be there. They were forced to fight in the war.

The one thing that Americans benefited from the Vietnam war was the end of the draft.

The fact that the government of South Vietnam was staunchly Catholic and early on made little effort to conceal its desire to forcibly convert the population, which was 95% Buddhists, certainly made "winning the hearts and minds of the people" very difficult indeed. The war wasn't just a conflict of political ideologies, it was also a clash of cultures and religions.

Any countries that have more than five people who know they live there? I don't suppose it matters that Cambodia was only communist by name, and that Laos was so insignificant I forgot about it.

There are five times as many countries in the region than those who went to communism. Good point though, I suppose.

Well the main goal in preventing the spread of Communism was to prevent Commies getting close enough to strike Australia, in that respect no one gave a **** about Cambodia and Laos. Vietnam, however, was on the eastern coast.

Interestingly the Australian government was a lot more hawkish on Vietnam then the Americans. The Australian PM of the time begged the US and South Vietnam for permission to send Australian troops to South Vietnam

IMHO, the whole 'domino theory' was just so much BS. Communism failed to spread to the other South East Asian nations becuase the population of these nations weren't quite as pissed off at their government as the Vietnamese were, and not becuase America fought the commies to a halt as some people claim.
