I wouldn't call it genocide either...

Maybe attempted genocide. Nobody's ever actually managed to commit genocide to my knowledge.

According to the secondary definition of "genocide" at www.dictionary.com:

genocide n : systematic killing of a racial or cultural group
"Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "

Shi, the problem is that we will not be able to find any one solution that will piss nobody off. That doesn't mean that we should just throw up our hands and say it's pointless to try and win over the muslim world. It is in our own best interests if we don't paint ourselves as their enemies. Humanitarian gestures go a long way towards changing our image. It's not like we have to make them out of sincerity, or anything. If the US is seen globally as using its resources to aid the disadvantaged and encourage peace, how many people will be inclined to consider it the source of all their problems?

The world is complicated, and we need to stop relying on simplistic solutions like the use of force. Three thousand years ago, in the Art of War, Sun Tzu said that fighting must always be the last resort of any general; you should only fight when you have absolutely no other choice. Politicians need to learn the art of subtlety.

In any case, we don't export culture. We export sh*t. If the ubiquitous McDonald's quit spreading all over the world, life probably would be easier for us.
It is certain; my conviction gains infinitely the moment another soul chooses to believe in it.

How exactly do we fund them then? By buying ME oil?

Barring the Taliban itself, Saudi Arabia is probably the most fundie regime in the world.
How so? I know that they pay "protection money" to fundamentalist causes in order to stave off the inevitable coup instead of actually implimenting reforms to thier regime but I hadn't heard anything about them being fundies.

Hell, the Taliban are offshoots of the Saudis!
No, they are a Pakistani creation. They however probably do recieve money from the House of Saud. More of the "protection money" I refered to earlier.

Frodo had an insightful thought process going, then the McDonald's brain fart threw me.

The rest of it was pretty good though.

Nice to see that americans are as ignorant about their cultural imperialism as they have always been.

That's the main beef that most islamic fundementalists have, they despise the western culture that is spreading through their countries.

I just didn't realize there were a lot of McDonald's in Afghanistan, Osweld.

How exactly do we fund them then?
No, as Natan pointed out, helping to prop up their gov't with our soldiers.

                        How so?
Minor things like the Qur'an being law, women being barred from driving, and non-Moslem holy sights being razed.

The reason why we don't lump them with the rest of the Islamic fundies is because they're pro-Western.

I know that they pay "protection money" to fundamentalist causes in order to stave off the inevitable coup instead of actually implimenting reforms to thier regime but I hadn't heard anything about them being fundies.

Uh huh. The Saudis financially sustained the Taliban. This isn't simply "protection money."

We should send these poor kids to Boys Towns of America. I'm sure that with all that bombing their lives have become "just one big pain."

Which is hardly enough in and of itself to keep the House of Saud afloat and in fact causes additional problems for them. What with the "infidels desecrating the Holy Land" and all.

The Europeans are the main ones keeping the despotic regimes in the ME with thier addiction to ME oil. Hi Roland.

The reason why we don't lump them with the rest of the Islamic fundies is because they're pro-Western.
Which keeps them from being "truely" fundamentalist in the eyes of the rest of the fundies.

Uh huh. The Saudis financially sustained the Taliban. This isn't simply "protection money."
Why isn't it? It keeps the real fundies happy and allows the sentiment against them to have a release valve in order to keep it from toppling thier government. Anyway, I doubt that you'd find people who would willingly fund the organization of someone who wants you dead.

To the point though, I really don't think you can go around killing kids, just because they might grow up to be like their dad. A more feasible option would be to keep tabs on what they're doing, and maybe prevent them from travelling to Western countries.

Sounds good, but then it just breeds resentment.
                                I refute it thus!
