  • My name is Lib, and I'm new here

    [...clearing throat...]

Ahem. Assuming I haven't been whooshed, I understand that it's a tradition to start an "I'm new here" thread. Not sure what I'm supposed to say, but I guess a brief introduction is in order.

I'm a long-time Doper (as in Straight Dope Message Board), and I've spent most of my time there in Great Debates, wrangling with materialists, creationists, and other aberrant philosophers. I spend some time in the BBQ Pit, because I like writing parodies.

In real life, I'm married (second wife), pretty old (mid 40s), but the heart and soul of a kid. I develop websites and related stuff for a living, and lately, I've gotten back into playing Civ. (Got a pretty great game going currently.)

Anyway, fire away. I have a pretty thick skin, and I can tolerate just about anything. Except ignorance, I guess. Any questions?

    Lib

I don't think he is a DL. People, you have to be nice to newbies...
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Is this a plot to take over the board?

The Libertarian Horde seems to be growing in strength. They must be up to something.

I have a question for Libertarian: Are you an objectivist?

Hmmm... Too short for search... Wonder if I could deduce this. Lessee, "d!ck licker", "dung lover", "dingbat loser", "dumb liberal", "damn leech"... Hmmm.

I have a question for Libertarian: Are you an objectivist?
Of a sort. I took all the good stuff, you know the basics: metaphysics — objective reality; epistemology — reason; ethic — self-interest. But I discarded all the Ayn Rand worshipping, and all the weird crap, like the official esthetic and such.

But actually, I do refer to myself as a Libertarian Objectivist Christian.

btw, I'm the resident USA-basher here. Nice to meet you. I'm also a communist voting for labour. Ask Bob Dornan about that one.

Rule no.1, Libertarian - don't make an "I'm new" thread.

Well there goes another nail in the coffin of my theory that its possible to be a Libertarian without being a Objectivist. I was so hoping to prove myself right.

You do realise that calling yourself "Libertarian" means that there's going to be a really long and convoluted argument about your qualities?
