We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. - Abraham Lincoln
You're letting scruples get in the way of a good time, Roland.
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL! BYOB for everyone!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
Unfortunately for the perfectionist builder, Civ3 is not conducive to growth in the early game at the upper levels (Emporer and Deity). As the Romans, I've found myself needing to stake out territory in the early game by defeating my closest neighbor militarily. This buys a couple of millenia for you to grow and sometimes gets you a leader to complete a wonder. You're shooting for about a dozen full-sized cities. Push to Banking and Riflemen as quickly as possible.
"I’m surprised you can put this together in the evenings with a partner, I thought you’d need a fully-fledged team for it these days."
Colon: I think the main reason why we're able to do this is because we're keeping it really simple and only biting off as much as we can chew. For instance, we only build one part of the board, while importing the rest from Korea. This allowed us to bring the product to market in about 3 months--much, much less development time than a product would take normally. We tried to reduce our risk at every turn, but there's still a lot of risk.
"Are you searching for a distributor or will you handle orders yourself?"
We're handling orders ourselves. There are two factors that are helping us here.
(1) The web is immensely useful in helping a geographically diverse startup business keep on top of things. For instance, we have a sign-up page at www.sdisilk.com which hooks into the main database. The main database keeps all of the customer and order information and in the future will be built out to handle all business functions. I could be in Tahiti running the show and no one would be the wiser.
(2) We are selling these as OEM parts to Do-It-Yourselfers and home theater computer manufacturers, such as www.cellarcinemas.com. We'll sell to anyone--even at 1x quantity--but we don't really provide support. This is only a known way of doing business in the PC hardware business. I daresay most other areas of the economy would feel uncomfortable working this way. This allows us to only answer e-mails--no telephone calls. Again, I could be in Tahiti...
"IMO a firm with a lot of excess cash isn’t necessarily a good firm to invest in, because it could point to a lack of ambition or imagination and because there’s a meagre return on cash."
I agree. With Matsu****a, I think this might be what's going on. With COMS, I think it more likely that people looked too much at the short-term negatives of the business and started even to discount the cash...

“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”
Different markets, products, ways of doing business, and price-point. We're doing SDI input. They're doing firewire input. We're going after video processing in a home theater, which is a fairly new field for PCs. They're going after people doing Non-Linear Editing, which is a mature field for PCs. They're making a closed box. We're enabling everybody else's closed or open boxes. We're selling a solution that comes in at about $2,000 with all the fixins (we sell only the cards). They're coming in at $4,000 with some fixins.

Well last week I went to Roland's after the GDP data came out. Well I tried to, showed up and nobody was there, no Bier, no nothing.
I thought you German people had this rule about never turning away guests!
Anyway, another rate cut. This sh1t needs to stop NOW.

Now here's something interesting, this Aussie company, Epi-tan, holds the exclusive rights for the tanning pill Melanotan, a pill which has proven to increase melanin production in the skin. (Not only tans the skin but protects it from sun damage as well).
This was developed at the University of Arizona, but I believe the major side effect of the original pill that it couldn't go to market was that it was giving the men who took it hardons. They expect their Phase II trials to be done by late 2002. The company expects to have it in production for sale in Australia by 2005.
Well I guarantee there will be millions of marks, *ahem* excuse me EUROS, of the product sold in Deutschland once it comes out. Any place there are Anglos or Germans, you'll find HUGE sales. And being that those places also tend to be the richest places on Earth, well...
I would personally buy it, as my ass has been burned as a youngster way too many times...and staying in the office all damn day and not does not do one good for the complection...

My gun has more ammo in it than that slow flying thingie with the dual gatling guns that has been kicking Taliban ass lately.
I even have a name for it, "RAMBO".

Teddybwoy, regarding Epitan’s product, I agree that Melanotan is a very interesting product. (with a god-awful name) However, don’t forget that from the investor’s POV what matters is not the sales and profits potential on its own but its relation with the costs of getting a piece of the action. Even first class companies can be and have been overvalued.
I’m surprised how little the R&D has cost, only $8 million while the global market is worth $1 billion pa according to them. (R&D costs for pharma products are usually in the $0.5-$1bn range IIRC)
Their finances seem strong to me, $7ml in cash, already $7.5ml in receivables, negligible debt while they intend to spend just $2.5ml this year. I’m sure they can get additional funds easily enough, particularly because pharmacy is popular after the tech bust. (at least it still was last time I checked)
GP, I don’t know Ventana Medical Systems but I hope their products have nicer names.
