        Ramo,
I'd bet that the US was more of a welfare state than Sweden during WW II.
I said otherwise? You're obfuscating, whatever welfare state the US had then was miniscule and irrelevant to what I said. Do you wanna bet Sweden would have been left alone by the Nazis and Soviets if the west didn't provide resistance?

Errr.. it was hardly miniscule. And I'm not obfuscating, you were saying that they can afford a welfare state only because the US saved them from Germany (and I do doubt that the Soviets would've invaded Sweden if met by resistance by the entire West besides the US). That doesn't make any sense.

Your argument might have make a little bit of sense if it were 1940, and that Sweden had a massive welfare state at the time. As is, it's pretty much nonsense.

Doesn't seem especially unreasonable. I mean, would she file suit if it wasn't rape?

No, it has been known since the 50's. Apparently though only academics and lefties care about it. I mean, if people can be happy even if they don't have big houses, fast cars, and lots and lots of toys, how could the Capitalist Dream be sold?

The article acts as if going from 4th to late teens in GDP per capita isn't a very big fall or maybe illusory with regard to wellbeing, and then blames the right for that fall.

The good thing about economic ideological "battles" is that the better system wins out over time. You don't really have to argue about which one is better. We can be patient.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

We stayed out of WW2 because we continued selling iron ore to Germany, not because America protected us. You stayed on your side of the pond for the essential part of WW2 anyway. Germany declared war to you, not the other way around.

We had a 700 000 man army in the cold war. And one of the worlds largest airforces during parts of it. Today our army is quite smaller, but we have bad-ass equipment.

There are some fundamental problems with the way GDP is calculated. If you build a building, it adds to the GDP. However, if you tear it down immediately, it adds to the GDP too. In effect nothing has been built, but a lot has been added to GDP.

That bastion of the left, the Economist, recently had an article about how how happy people feel have little to do with GDP per capita ...

Whether 4th to 17th is a big fall would depend on how big differences are. I don't know.

Notice how the Swedes began cutting back on their system when globalisation exposed flaws?
Your knowledge about post war swedish economic development seems a bit to bad for you to start a rage about it here.

chain stores as H&M and Ikea, whose aesthetic quality

OK Ikea I can understand, but isn't H&M (Hennes & Mauritz?) just full of cheap knock-offs? I'm not a snob, I do go there myself, but I have doubts about the "quality" bit.

Evil furriner! How dare you doubt the non-classiness of IKEA.

Yup, H&M is stuffed the length and breadth of it with cheap knock-offs. That's pretty much the business concept.

I love IKEA. The DIY concept, the wacky names, the funny food, the catalogue... The whole thing is so delightfully evil.
