Mamdouh Habib was arrested in Pakistan 3 years ago on a bus. He said he was in Pakistan looking for an Islamic school for his children. The Pakistani authorities were more interested in 2 Germans on the bus but Habib stepped in to defend them and the Pakistani Police said, "right, we'll take you too."
Habib is a duel Australian/Egyptian citizen. The Pakistanis, after torturing him themselves, handed him over to the Egyptians who tortured him over 6 months. It is alleged this was part of the US "rendition" program where prisoners are sent to other countries for torture.
He signed certain confessions under torture in Egypt and was sent to Guantanamo Bay where other released prisoners claim he was further tortured and mistreated.
After 3 years of this treatment he is being released without charge by the US.
His physical and mental health is said to be poor.
In Australia he was a cleaner.
One Australian remains in US custody at Gitmo.
