Actually, when I look at that animation, for me is clear why they were not so badly affected-the Nicober islands break the wave heading to the more exposed parts of Burma, and also disrupt that going to bangladesh-after all, damage in India up north is also light.

As for Kontiki's questions about the Maldives, maybe the fact they are so lowlying means than when the wave comes, it does notbuild up as much as when hitting a more significant landmass and passes with less interference.

You must also pay attention to under water mountains and valleys which an disrupt energy from a potential tsunami.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

First cases of cholera reported from India. Prepare for a lot worse
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards

I was really saddened by all of the people who were looking for missing relatives. For some reason that affects me more than someone who has definitely lost their relatives. I guess because you know that they are being gnawed with uncertainty while someone who has lost a relative is already beginning to deal with it and move on with life.
which reminds me of 9/11. Yes I know this is far worse.

but all those signs searching for lost relatives. You don't know if they are alive or dead, but there is a pretty good chance they are dead.

and in that second animation, it looks like it should have hit Madagascar. Which is what I was curious about.

It did, as it hit the rest of the African east coast. Last I heard, 3 people died in Kenya, 10 in Tanzania and the Seychelles and Madagascar only had property damage. Fortunately they have plenty of time to prepare themselves so the effects were minimal (which also explains the limited media coverage).

and why do so many Europeans travel to those regions of the world? I don't understand why they were considered paradise. It all seems like jungle to me.

The Netherlands: 6 dead, "dozens" missing.

The Dutch state news service NOS reports that India has reduced the official death toll from 13,268 to 10,736. This because 3,000 people in the Andaman and Nicobar islands who were presumed dead have been found alive. 'Only' 712 confirmed dead there now. I can't find any other reports to back this up, but if true that's very good news

There is some (low, however) number of dead Poles too.

A friend of my sister, however, went on a trip into other region of India just for that time, and she's ok.
She's had a lot of luck - unfortunatelly, others did not.

It's been a backpacker haven for awhile, then there was that movie with DiCaprio (The Beach) and it became very popular in general. Especially Scandinavians go there to get away from their dark cold winter, think Canadians and Florida.

Luxembourg still has 23 missing, which is quite a large amount for a country with 400k inhabitants. No confirmed dead yet though. All the people that my parents knew that were there at the time are safe.

Some the pictures i have seen alomst look like the pictures you seem from Nagasaki or Hiroshima, only slightly wetter..
