This is a terrible loss of life. I would say at least it didn't occur on land but from what has happened it appears that it spread the damage far and wide.

For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

Anyway, I have family in India, most in Calutta and surrounding area. Most of them appear to be fine, though some (in other areas of India) are reporting that airpots have been sunk and that they have recievied minor injuries from it all.

So a Richter 8 earthquake is 10 times as powerful as a Richter 7 - but I'm not entirely sure, maybe someone more knowledgeable can correct any false assumptions that I might have.
I would also like to add that I was stunned by the insensitive comments that VJ made - you really ought to know better man!19th Century Liberal, 21st Century European

Only a small southern part of Thailand was affected. Your friends are probably currently having a hangover in a brothel in Bangkok (nothing personal, it's just that I still haven't figured out what else westerners do in Thailand than **** little kids).
thailand is a country that's developing fast, building industry.
'course, given what you said after that, i'm not surprised you didn't know this... you seem quite ignorant of asia.
I've never heard of the place before... just how can you guys over here remember the exact location of every single place around the globe?
krakatoa was the site of an enormously large volcano eruption.
I hope you never have to deal with the loss of a loved one before their time.
actually, no offense intended, i hope he does. if he posts about it here, he'll understand just why you don't act like an ass when somebody else is worried about their family.

also, richter scale is base-10 logarithmic. 8.0 is 10 times more powerful than 7.0; 8.9 is about 9.5 times as powerful as an 8.0.B♭3
