Quake was at the northern tip of Sumatra and all the tsunamis are hitting on the west side of the Malay Peninsula. I think my friends are at resorts on the east side of the peninsula, on the Gulf of Thailand.

That's where Krakatoa is. I hope the tsunami weren't anything like the ones that Krakatoa produced.

The death toll's at 2,200 and climbing ... reports of walls of water 20 feet high washing over villages ...

The latest from BBC 24 puts it at 2500 dead. 1000 of them in India alone.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
            -Richard Dawkins

1000 dead in India, 1500 in Sri Lanka, where a national emergency has been declared. Death toll at 3000 and rising

ships are safe, AFAIK. a tsunami is barely noticed in mid-ocean.

The only problem could be the drilling equipment, that would be attached to the bottom of the ocean in some way. But even then, the tide is like a meter high or something in mid ocean, it's like a relatively large wave or something.

/me crosses his fingers for all the people, and esp. germanos' relatives.

Many big earthquakes this week. One of the biggest earthquakes ever measured (8.4 or something) was less than week ago on an unhibited Antarctic island.

But this one is much worse in power.

The locations mentioned so far are all in the Bay of Bengal area, west of Thailand (including Phuket and Aceh (Atjeh in Dutch)). Brunei is well over 1500 kms east of that and protected from a tsunami by the Thai/Malay peninsula, so at least for your brother there shouldn't be any need to worry.

And as Azazel said, midsea a tsunami is virtually unnoticable.

I hope that everyone else is alright though and that the death tole doesn't rise further, this is a terrible thing

I'll be really pissed if the fundies are right and this is the beginning of the Apocalypse.

On the other hand, I'm a sure bet for hell, so I won't be seeing any of the buggers again.
