I just phoned my sister in law and everything is fine.

My brother is safe, everything is normal.

As the reports from the Thai resorts were poor, I mistakenly thought that perhaps the Thai southern coast was hit . I didn't realize the Thai coast facing Sumatra was that large . Must be because when i visit Malaysia, I usually head out to Malaysia's eastcoast, it's so much better then the westcoast.

Don't know how my sister-in-law's family is doing on Penang Island, but given the few casulties there, I guess I shouldn't worry too much.

Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards

        I'm deeply sad about this.

Here we are used to have quakes, the lastest faced in the central valley was a 8.1 ~ 8.3 in 1985, which provoked damages but not to many deaths, thank God.
On 1960 several quakes hit south Chile. On May 21st, three 7.5 hit Concepción, on May 22nd a 8.1 hit Valdivia at 3.10pm and then a 9.6 hit the same city at 3.40pm. New lakes and hills born from that quake, which was the biggest recorded ever. After the quakes a huge tsunami sunk the cities in the south and huge waves reached Easter Island, Hawaii and Japan...

I can't imagine what is facing 6 tsunamis a day (like people in south east Asia faced today), or even two huge quakes... I only hope that the aftershocks aren't that big and rescue operations work properly.

My thoughts and prays with the people of South East Asia.

Yeah, the figures are now up to 6000+. Before the end of this, we could easily have 10,000 dead from this monster quake.

Last I heard it was 7,100 from drudgereport. I would expect it to climb to 25,000 or greater. Why the high number is because the area this hit was densely populated. I'm deeply saddened by this event and several of my relatives were in Thailand on vacation at the time. I have no words on their safety and do not know anything right now on it. I'm hoping that they were NOT those trapped in that one cove off Thailand.

This will probably be inaccurate in one hour.

THE death toll from an earthquake off Indonesia and the tsunamis that it unleashed reached 10,226 today, with officials reporting deaths in seven countries in southern and southeastern Asia.

in Sri lanka, over a million wounded and displaced, IIHC.
Good. Perhaps that'll teach the idiots that they have to build proper housing before starting a civil war over trivial differences regarding their religions.

Yeah right, who am I kidding...

Only a small southern part of Thailand was affected. Your friends are probably currently having a hangover in a brothel in Bangkok (nothing personal, it's just that I still haven't figured out what else westerners do in Thailand than **** little kids).

Little late for that. Well over 500 hundred now
I doubt the amount killed will get much over 50k.

                              Off the topic:

I've never heard of the place before... just how can you guys over here remember the exact location of every single place around the globe?

VJ, you're a rude little brat. Nothing personal? WTF? These are my damn relatives you are speaking about. You better show some god damn respect. If I were to ever see you, I swear I would kick the... they are not my friends but my family. You should just jump off a cliff you little insulting....

I still have no words from them as they were in the Southern portion of Thailand!
