by the time hillary runs she will be repainted to be so conservative, i might vote for her

i'm sure she will get the nod next time, because just like dole in '96, it's her turn. i expect she will take a drubbing. but then again, I never thought Willie could win a second term.

      • Hillary will always be remembered for what she is. A lying piece of **** who will always be the most liberal candidate out there trying to cover her ass with "hawkish comments". By the way, communism is insane, agathon. Regain your sanity and give up your beliefs.

This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. I'd like to kick Manhattan out of New York though.... keep long island though.

Manhattan does not share the ideas of the rest of the state . New York is a mix of various degrees of democrats, I would say leaning towards conservatism on the consertvative/liberal scale BUT New York swings it pretty hard in the libreal direction .

My view is that it's inevitable sooner or later. Either that or we're all dead. Previous attempts have had mixed fortunes. Trying it in Russia of all places was probably a bad idea. Information technology makes it much more feasible.

I'm not for it right now. At present I think the best thing we can do is try to strengthen democratic forces against our corporate and class masters, and devote more time and energy to solving real problems instead of buying fashionable clothes.

                • inevitable because sheeple need government to lead them around? (serious question, i believe you are serious about the need for communism)

I really believe that unbridled entrepreneurialism is the key to freedom for the proletariat (those that will work, anyway)

That's an inflammatory way of putting it. Some people used to say this about New Zealand (where I lived) back in the day when the government ran many industries and services. The reality was that people did pretty much what they wanted, and things worked pretty well.

I lived in a village where all the houses were built by the state and rented at low prices by the state. They were pretty solid houses too. The state owned electricity company ran the village and employed a gang of workers to keep the public gardens looking nice and to make sure everything was in good repair (they would paint your house, if you didn't want to do it yourself). Some might think this a statist nightmare; in fact it was a pretty nice place to live. In contrast to the idea of "sheeple" being led around, folk appreciated not having to worry about a lot of things (for much the same reason as people who live in private planned communities).

And no, there were no secret police. The state didn't really have any reason to monitor people or even care about what they did in their private lives.

I really believe that unbridled entrepreneurialism is the key to freedom for the proletariat (those that will work, anyway)

Well, here we disagree. What worries me as much as freedom for the poor, are the effects of unbridled capitalism on the environment and government.

                    • isn't it just human nature to slack off when someone else is responsible for your outcome?
Segments of our own population have replaced the father in the home with a government check and IMHO that is the cause of spiraling dependency on government and a corresponding sense of hopelessness .

                      • Agathon, no doubt some people actually like living in a socialist paradise. I was once lived in a semitary, so I know what communal living really is all about. It is somewhat none stressful, although there is no true freedom.

The only problem for such societies is that they live side-by-side with capitalist countries where individual initiative can bring great wealth. Ambitious people will leave the socialist paradise for the greater wealth and freedom of the capitalist society. Among the ambitious are the well educated, who cannot make much more than the ordinary worker in the socialist paradise. What happens, therefor, is a constant brain drain of the best and brightest to capitalism.

In Europe, the socialists built a wall and created "exit" visas. But, in the long run, the people were dissastisfied with the poor quality of life provided by socialism, as in socialism there is no invention and no technical progress, at least when compared to capitalism.

So, socialism can exist here and there, but it is inherently unstable and will always move toward greater economic and personal freedom and gradually or suddenly transform into a capitalist society.

The same phenomenon holds true across the rest of the country. Urban counties are blue; rural counties are red.

                            • Agathon is not very well. He speaks of "democracy"... yet his beliefs will bring tyranny and poverty. The society he speaks of cannot exist because it would imprison humanity and force us to work all at the same. It is not going to happen. Inevitable my rear end.

No, but some around here and in the world treat him as a god with an answer for everything, even though he lies about everything.
