In my opinion the problem with the Democratic party won't be solved by swinging left or right. It's a regional problem, I'm not talking red state/blue states it's more of a rural/suburban/urban issue. The red states in general have more rural (including small towns/'cities') than the blue states.
IMO the Democrats are fully capable of winning a nation wide election, what they will have harder time doing is retaking the house and senate. The Democratic party for years was basically two parties who caucused together, they need to try to go back to that.
Oh and if we're talking about a left/right swing understand it would be a social swing not an economic one.
