I found it pretty meh. It's a damn good try for Gonzo, but that doesn't mean much. They really muck up the ending, but they're pretty famous for it.
I'm a total fanboy of the genre and aviation in general, so I knew I'd like it before I even saw it.

Then again, I like a lot of Gonzo titles that many others dislike.

I'm more a fan of the really old anime like Astro Boy and Prince Planet (both were @1965). Marine Boy was good too.

As an introduction, especially for a girl, you should really look for Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki. These are movies for a broad audience, and the first one is especially fit for girls (while still enjoyable for blokes).

Miyazaki has also made other very pleasant movies like Totoro, Castle in the Sky and Kiki delivery service. The quality and perfectionism of his movies make for a great anime experience.

Last but not least in Miyazaki's repertoire, Nausicaa is a very good movie as well, but older. The graphics aren't as great as by his more recent works.

If she is hooked by Miyazaki, she should enjoy plenty of anime afterwards. I personally like Cowboy Bebop very much, and I have loved Evangelion, but it is quite a boy's thing I think.

Inu Yasha is quite nice, though it is a very very long series, which gets repetitive after the 16th episode or something like that. Edit: After reading more of your posts, I think Inu Yasha is good for her needs. It is a foray in a mythical medieval Japan (very heavy on fantasy, as Samurai make only a token appearance). It's not really intellectual, but it's enjoyable, andtakes time to display many myths of traditional Japan. The fansubbers often make an effort of explanation.

Who's the enemy that looks like a leper, sets things on fire from Rurouni Kenshin?

I don't know if he's from the series or the movie/prequel thingy.

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Well, we went through Escaflowne pretty quickly...we both really liked the series, but thought the movie was pretty meh due to the lack of a coherent plot. We've been busy lately, but I think we're going to start raiding some of Netflix's library in the near future. She wants to try Wolf's Rain next, I think...not entirely sure why, but apparently she's heard about it in a couple of places and is interested. Also wants to see Twelve Kingdoms, but since it's not entirely out in English, we'll probably wait on it.

It sucks. I had to restrain myself from throwing things at my TV when I saw an episode on Adult Swim.

The movie just was terrible, aside from the music.

Wolf's Rain might not be as awful as DinoDoc says it is, but it's hardly a first choice. Some of the previously mentioned items in the thread are probably better.

Hmm... we should really make a new standard anime thread one of these days.

Therefore this is not a syllogism.

I really have not seen any series better than FULL METAL ALCHEMIST. It was very hard to wait for the last episode to come out. My advice is to not let anyone tell you about it and watch the first 10 episodes, if you like it finish the series.
Also the movie comes out this year but i am sad it doesnt look like it concludes the series (it looks like a long episode)
I would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotamy

I was just thinking FMA and there is pops up. meh

I'm thinking "saiyuki", but not having seen the whole series means someone else have to explain it.

I"m also thinking about "Tuskihime", mostly a vampire story that is not very vampire story-like. It is serious but not dark. Saying more would probably be spoilers. It also overlaps with some other genres in anime and one can branch out from this.

Oh and I second "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind." It is about a world dominated by giant forest-worm ecosystems with humans struggle to survive on fringe lands far away from the forest. Though I don't think the movie does the whole story justice, and I'd recommand the manga for the whole, epic, story.

Yuu Watase (sp?) works are popular for one thing: bishonen. (petty boys......for fangirl fantasy....)
