You have to compare them to what came before much more than what has come after. Their lyrics were frequently sappy, but that was par in the '50s and early '60s.
That said, they are overrated but not the most overrated.
Early U2 was great, then they started to wither as the sun was gradually blocked out by Bono's enormous ego. But not "most" overrated. Beach Boys? Greatly overrated but not the most overrated.
Greatful Dead? We're getting into nosebleed altitude overratedness, but still not there yet.
Elvis has got to be #1 overrated. Especially "older, fat Las Vegas Elvis."(\__/) Save a bunny, eat more Smurf!

For its time it's pretty hard to top Good Vibrations. That's probably the most inventive pop single ever.

But on a lighter note, at one fo the MTV video awards, Nirvana was playing, and Kris nOvolselic tried to copy Pete Townshend by throwing his guitar up in the air a good twenty feet, and then catching it. Only, he f***ed up and it smashed his head!
