If I saw those cartoons in a British newspaper, I'd wonder why they were being so restrained.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
    -Richard Dawkins

The doonesbury cartoon, using the term "brown sugar" (which means a negro prostitute) is racist.

Ahh, no, since he is saying Bush would use that term-that is calling Bush racist.

yeah but Bush never used that term (that we know of), he is putting words in Bush's mouth. Thusly, we conclude the author is using racially insensitive remarks.

No, the writer is just mistaking nepotism for tokenism. That's to say, the writer assumes that Dear Leader appointed someone as inept as Rice because she's a minority, rather than because he rewards loyalty over competence.

                  .
You missed my point then, I found putting Condi in the role of a black servant from Gone with the Wind to be offensive. Imagine the reaction if Powell had been treated that way in an anti-Powell right wing cartoon, or if Kofi Annan had been treated that way.

Powell has been treated like that in plenty of political cartoons.

I am sure the robber barrons hated being depicted badly in political cartoons- and you know what? Who gives a ****?

Its political cartooning- people who offend easily about trivial things will always get "offended". If only they became trully offended at the things that matter the world would be better off.

Are you saying that Condi Rice is incompetent???

Do I have to remind you of her credentials?

Wow, now if she ran a university, or maybe a cultural instutition I might give a damn- she needs to be a public diplomat in her new role.

Interesting how you only cite things she has done *before* being in office. I'd also note, like GePap touched on, that those activities do not necessarily correlate to the duties she has needed to perform for 4 years or now needs to perform.

Her record in office is awful, so yes, I think she is incompetent for her current position. She should go back to teaching.

On a closely related note, I don't care a whit how good someone's credentials are if they are currently being incompetent. If you can make them competent quickly, then they should be moved to some other position. Either temporarily if they can get their act together, or permanently if the job is too much for them.

If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper -- that makes this country work." - Barack Obama

That's the point... Bush wouldn't realize the negative connotations of the nickname.
