Although the practice was never widespread, some Utah pioneers held African-American slaves until 1862 when Congress abolished slavery in the territories.
Slavery was legal in Utah as a result of the Compromise of 1850, which brought California into the Union as a free state while allowing Utah and New Mexico territories the option of deciding the issue by "popular sovereignty." Some Mormon pioneers from the South had brought African-American slaves with them when they migrated west. Some freed their slaves in Utah; others who went on to California had to emancipate them there.

The Mormon church had no official doctrine for or against slaveholding, and leaders were ambivalent. In 1836 Joseph Smith wrote that masters should treat slaves humanely and that slaves owed their owners obedience. During his presidential campaign in 1844, however, he came out for abolition. Brigham Young tacitly supported slaveholding, declaring that although Utah was not suited for slavery the practice was ordained by God. In 1851 Apostle Orson Hyde said the church would not interfere in relations between master and slave.

You can have the other 2.

Most Northerners didn't oppose slavery, they opposed the expansion of slavery. They wanted to keep the west white man's land, free of blacks. Most poor Southerners didn't care about slavery one way or another. They didn't own slaves, they couldn't afford to. That's why West Virginia borke away from Virginia, and thats why the Appalachian south was largely unionist. Poor Southerners thought blacks were inferior, but so did almost everyone else. The only people who really cared about defending slavery were the rich Southern plantation owners, whose way of life depended on slavery. They wanted to extend into the territories because if geographic limitations on slavery would ultimately lead to limitations on the political power of the Southern plantation owner. That map is meaningless if you're referring to Civil War attitudes on racial tolerance or equality.

The war was fought technically to oppose the rebellion but the spirit of it came alive when it became the cause to end slavery

Study some history... read some first hand historical documents, read some of Lincoln's writings and speeches... I'm not saying that there weren't abolitionists (there certainly were), I'm saying that they were clearly a minority voice and certainly not the driving force behind the war.

Yet abolition became the driving force of the war.

Sorta like when the President convinced a bunch of people to invade a country because they supposedly had weapons of mass destruction they were going to give to terrorists.
