  • Imagine what would have happened if the US had tried to occupy Japan with 140,000 soldiers?

And by the way the Iraqi educational system USED to be the best in the entire middle east up until Saddam decided to be a dumbass and invade Kuwait. Baghdad was once the most advanced academic city in the world in it's time, far ahead of its European counterparts, before the Mongols burned it down.

In any case, you don't put young men in harms' way with one arm tied behind their back. If you are going to go to war then don't half ass the job.

    • How much fighting was there in Japan in December 1945?

      • There's absolutely no point in comparing Iraq in '04 and Japan in 1945. It's like comparing apples and ...and.....

        ....something really un-apple like...??

Not even Vietnam is a good parallel. There is no 'north iraq', no powerful outside allies, and the Iraqi people just aren't stirring up westerners sympathies much.

Phillipines is a good parallel, the US was fighting muslim Moros in the south for decades, slaughtering the enemy in large numbers while losing very few, however the muslims there just kept coming back for decades.

Heck I think the Moros are still fighting??

        • Phillipines is indeed the best example.

            • That struck me as an odd thing to say, too. It isn't Iraqi culture that's the problem, it's the radical Islam that was exported out of Saudi Arabia into the rest of the Muslim world.

              • I'm really bothered by people who think that Third World cultures have remained static since the Middle Ages with no changes from the end of the Middle Ages, to today.
