It makes NO sense, when we're already losing jobs by exporting them overseas and then giving other jobs to illegal immigrants.

Well they have the jobs anyway.Am I not correct in assuming that work permits are only an amnesty measure if they already have the jobs?

Who cares if they already have the jobs?

What part of the word "illegal" do people have trouble understanding?

Lots of untraced illegals is better than lots of traceable and soon to be deported former illegals?

I don't buy into the mudsill nonsense that illegal immigrants have only jobs that American citizens would never take.

You don't comprehend what I'm saying.

It's a given that most illegal immigrants take sh!tty jobs. But I vouch that there are American citizens who would be willing to swallow hard, and take such a sh!tty job for themselves if they're in really tight financial situation.

It's sad to see Pekka and others pounding to get in legally, but anyone who illegally sneaks in may be rewarded with temporary, and possibly later full under other proposals, legal status.

If that were true, there'd be no demand for undocumented labor.

Illegals can't become guest workers. They have to apply at the U.S. Embassy in their home country.

Under one of the bills proposed they can become guest workers.

Its a half truth. Americans will do the work, but are hesitant to do it at minimum wage, especially since many of the Americans who would work those jobs used to have union/ manufacturing jobs where the received a living wage. Owners use the illegal immigrants as a way to low ball Americans, artificially keeping the wages lower.

$5.15 an hour is great for a Salvadorian, especially when they're paid under the table thereby avoiding taxes. They can survive in the US on that salary because you have 15 illegal males living in one house, all sharing a van or two, (which none of them are insured or liscensed to drive) all working for those wages and sharing the cost of living. Why not? $5.15 is big money to them. When they're ready to go home and spend their savings they find another illegal countryman to take their place, ensuring that their boss doesn't suffer a shortage of workers and, god forbid, have to raise his offered wages. Wages are kept at an artificially low level, low enough to discourage a tax paying American with a family to support from taking that job and going broke working.

The "Americans won't do that work" line is a myth. I come from a rural area and yes, American citizens are working at McDonalds for minimum wage. Illegal immigration hasn't reached our area to the extent that it has elsewhere in the country. I know plenty of people working two minimum wage jobs to keep afloat. My father is a steelworker, belongs to the union, and makes a decent wage for the area. He was laid off for over a year and during that time he took a job breaking rocks at a stone quarry for $6 an hour. The employer has no incentive to raise wages, because he can find illegals to do the work if an American would have the unmitigated gall to not want to do back-breaking physical labor for $6 and hour and no benefits.

There is no bargaining room for workers who are just starting out today; if you don't accept the paltry wages offered, employers will work the illegal system and import illegals to work at the low wage. Its a great deal, because neither side of the political spectrum wants to touch it. The left makes it a big racial issue, decrying xenophobic nativist bigots, while the right praises the new efficient global labor force and reaps the benefits of artificially cheap labor. Its perfect for everyone, except for those people who used to be the American working class.
