People that you would think prefer Kerry around here will vote for Bush because of a single issue, like gay marrige, stem-cell research, or gun control. One person told me that he wants to vote for Kerry, but says he must vote for Bush or he will go to hell for voting for a pro-choice canidate.

"If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper -- that makes this country work." - Barack Obama

I agree with Odin though, and I believe my first thread here at poly or some other site was about one issue voters because my aunt always votes for the pro choice person. Thus, consider the issue balanced.

Point taken, but it seems that most one-issue voters tend to be socially conservative people.

What if your issue is VERY important to you. I can imagine the calculation where losing on unimportant matters while getting the most important issue would be a net plus.
As a libertarian living in Canada I have no national party to support. My vote will usually go to the party offering the most personal freedom (or the 'less socialist' of my choices if you prefer). My single issue can filter through several policy lines.
