Why would Quebec want to be independent? You get the best of everything right now - non-stop *****ing and scapegoating about english Canada, and non-stop ass kissing, special treatment and boatloads of money in return.

If so, why?
A few reasons . . .
1. It leaves a large geographic hole in the middle of our country. Atlantic Canada will be physically separated from the rest of the country and I wonder how long the rest of the country will last. ( I have assumed Quebec would want to keep its existing boundaries).
2. I like Canada. Its not a perfect country but we do many things well and I don't want anyone to begin deconstructing it.
3. Implicit in a desire to leave is some concept the current system has wronged Quebec in some fashion. I cannot accept that. In fact, Quebec seems to enjoy favored status LOL.
4. Where would we get our prime ministers?? Aren't they always Quebecers??
On the flip side I can see some positives if it didn't have to mean the destruction of the country
a) We might be able to see someone other than the Liberals lead the country for a while
b) Some economic realities might hit home to Quebec nationalists. Quebec has been the largest have-not province for years and the biggest net recipient of transfer payments. There are also a LOT of federal institutions within Quebec. In a fair separation where Quebec assumed a portion of the national debt as part of the purchase price of buying federal assets within Quebec, it would be interestign to see how the Quebec economy fared

Except for this point.

As I am not for the independance of Quebec most of the time, I do not agree with you on this point of view.
Yes we have special treatments....half of the time. But can you agree with me that half of the time we are penelized for being in Quebec? Economicly, politicly but mostly culturaly? Can you agree that our culture is different? Those reasons make up for almost all people that want have an independant Quebec.
I see Canada's situation as 2 countries in one. 2 inmates that have to live in the same cell but just cant get along because of what their parents told them about their callmates family and all, eventhough they really want to. That's how I feel. I love Canada, and all of it's provinces....execpt for N-FL .

No I do not accept this particularly the economically and politically part. Canada has a long history of propping up businesses and industries inside Quebec . . Quebec exercises power within the fedral governemnt disproportionate to its size.

Yes I can-- But how does separation make it more different in the world of the internet and US cable programming. The language of business will still be English and anyone doing business will have to work in that language unless you intend an insular isolationsit economy.

My problem is that I see no reasons listed at all in what you just said. My question to you is simple, what types of specific things would Canada have to do to make you satisfied within the federation. Or is it simply a feeling of nationhood that one wants to satisfy by having a country.

I assume you are referring to Newfoundland and Labrador. You want to talk about grievances . .. NL has wanted to develop additional Labrador power for years but are denied the ability to transport it across Quebec. Basically Quebec iscontinuing to hold these developments hostage to their ownership demands.
Imagine if Manitoba tried to tell Alberta and Ontario that they would never permit a gas pipeline from one to the other unless given a stake in the gas fields supplying the pipe . ..
While I acknowledge the "two nations one country " history of our land, that is not the present and will not be the future of this country. Every year there are more and more people in Canada that have neither English or French as their first language

To this I have to say, "Isn't half the time enough?" It's not like Quebec has 1/2 the population of Canada.
And as a former British-Columbian, don't talk to me about being penalized economically, politically, etc. Sometimes it seems like Quebecers (just like Ontarians) assume Ontario is Canada, and that they're the only ones constantly getting shafted. We are 10 inmates in the same cell, not 2.
Further to Flubber's second point, the first seperation from Canada would be like the first crack in a dam. It would lead to the breakup of Canada, whether to several independant regions or by absorption into the US.
If Quebec left Canada, the Reform/Alliance/Conservative Kline lovers in western Canada would try to join the US. Alberta (at least the southern half) would be qite content as a Texas county !
There's nothing wrong with the dream, my friend, the problem lies with the dreamer.

I've actually seeing polls where poeple in Alberta and BC would try to splite off from Canada if Quebec does. Of course I've also heard the natives in northern Quebec would try to break off from Quebec and rejoin Canada.

2) Money blackhole
3) Bilingualism is absolutely ****ing useless and annoying to me where I live, and makes no sense seeing as about 3 other languages are more common than French aruond here...

Actually it is highly likely that the native groups that occupy a large portion of the Quebec landmass would want no part of an independent Quebec. Then you get into interesting questions as to the ability of people from other "nations" to secede.
How could Quebec which would be asserting its right to a separate nation deny the same right to obvious and dicstinct other nations.
