      • Norwich, UK

The City of Norwich is just hy of a thousand years old:

We've got a Castle, a proper one, that's got a shopping mall built underneath it. Culture and designer goods:

        And my uni campus.

Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

That's Portland, Maine. Apparently in early 1800s (1846 IIRC) there was a huge fire which pretty much took out most of the town. Coupled with the heavy bombardment by the British ships during the Revolutionary War which levelled most of the place, they passed a town law requiring all new buildings to be built with bricks.

When University of Southern Maine announced their new library designs like 10 years ago, it provoked a uproar since the building would be built with mostly blue materials.
