Canada's gain is simply a side effect, much like a fat chick getting horny by watching an orgy or some porn... she's never really involved, but if it makes her happy and she doesn't cause trouble then no one's going to complain.

I dunno, I suspect that the US and Canada would both avoid invasion just fine if the US drastically scaled back defense spending. All we really need is a navy that is better than that of any possible enemy. That isn't a very high bar to clear in terms of necessary military spending.
Yes, there is enough oil in the Western hemisphere for our own purposes, but that's not the way we are taught to buy and sell. Not to mention the health of major trading partners (Europe, Japan, China).
That means that Middle Eastern oil fields become very important, not because the US needs them, but because everyone needs them.
That leaves effectively you with the bill, since no one else seems willing to pay for the level of defence it would take to ensure the free flow of precious black stuff from the Gulf.
Meanwhile, back in NA, the industrious beaver is building a better health care damn while protected by defence spending that protects not only the continent, but the economic system he depends on.(\__/)

It's also interesting that while the french and indian war doesnt seem to have done much to unite the 13 colonies, Canadians report that war of 1812 served to unite them even though both wars occured before either was a country and even though both wars were essentially british wars involving british colonies. From whence comes these differing effects I wonder?
With the fall of New France, the colonialist cry changed from "Send more redcoats" to "Down with British tyranny".
It's not surprising that the "French and Indian War" did not become part of American national mythology because it doesn't fit the myth that the revolution overthrew a tyrannical, uncaring British occupation.Golfing since 67

There are some Canadians (usually conservative wanna-be Americans) who think that the US is defending Canada. It is not. The US defends its own self-interest and if that ever meant destroying Canada, the US would do it without a second thought.
The power of the US does not come from its military (which is struggling to control a rag-tag insurgency in Iraq). The US military is not much a threat, except to minor countries.
The power of the US comes from the American economy. If the US wants oil, it buys it. The people who have it, need to sell it and there's no way they can control where it ends up. IF the US wants a government overthrown, it finances a rebel group. And the threat of trade sanctions is far more powerful than any fleet.Golfing since 67
