The point is that many people who label themselves as conservatives are primarily doing it based on their adherence to an ideology about foreign policy, and that in this process 'true' conservatism wrt to domestic policy has been evacuated from the political spectrum.

Which doesn't say much about American voters. Apparently, y'all can be swayed by name calling.

Um... no, not true in the slightest. Before 9/11, the same people were 'conservatives' and were not linked at all with foriegn policy. It was more with cutting taxes as a link rather than anything else.

You really have a lot to learn about American politics.

The demonization of "liberal" goes back to at least Bush I, who spewed that crap non-stop while running against Dukakis (who himself was more a Clinton/Gore moderate wonk than a liberal).

What's really ironic is that polls have repeatedly shown that most Americans are actually liberals. That is, when polled on a variety of political issues, most Americans favor liberal positions (gun control, abortion rights, environmental regulation, higher government spending in exchange for more services, single-payer health care, etc.).

It's a tribute to the GOP propoganda machine that they've managed to demonize the term 'liberal" in the face of such support for liberal policies.

And just because Dino Doc has again brought up that Gallup poll, I feel obliged to point out that today's daily tracking poll in Slate has Kerry winning the Electoral college for the first time since the race began.

So maybe he is getting desparate. Or, per my new sig, maybe that's just how he always is...

Actually, I believe that most polls have shown Americans to be libertarian rather than conservative or liberal.

Exept Massachisettes is now around 25th when it comes to taxes. This is not the 1970's and Bush doesn't know anything about facts. Instead he simply tries to lie and label people.

Moreover, Massachusetts only gets back $0.79 for every $1 its citizens pay in federal taxes, and thus use their state taxes to make up the difference in paying for services. Whereas GOP strongholds like Mississippi can boast of low state taxes because their sucking so hard on the Federal teat.

Not true. Americans simply do not trust the market more than they trust the government; libertarians do.

you realize Bush is up by 8 points in the polls and he is going to absolutely crush John Kerry in the elecition, right?
I'm not so sure. The polls aren't exact they all have +/- section and nearly all are with in the +/-. Fact: No standing PResident since the 1930's has ever gotten more then one point more then his general approval rating in a general election. Thus if a President who's polling 48%, like Bush, won't get more then 49% according to the last 70 years of wisdom. That means Nader gets 1% and Kerry gets 50%.

Mark my words; on Nov 2nd Bush won't get more then +1% of his approval rating in the national poll.

Of course he may try something underhanded like declaring a terrorist emergency. MSNBC has reported that Bush gets a 4% bump when he raises the terrorism warning rate. Bush is such an unethical man that I wouldn't put it past him to declare an increased terror warnig just to get that 4%.

You're just wrong, and whatever about American politics.

There is an election right now, and Buchanan's point, as it seems, is that there is no conservative option. Kerry clearly isn't, while Bush is a neo-con on the international stage while being a... well, an impetuous spender on the domestic front. It's as simple as it gets.

I'm trying to tell you Bush is a ****e bag who is no where near a conservative. Also Kerry is no where near as liberal as the liar from Texas makes him out to be.

It's the National Journal (hardly a conservative rag) that makes him out to be such liberal and Kerry's campaign that acts as if the term is an awful insult.
