Recommend some Non-American Films and Expand Ted Striker's Horizons
Shaun of the Dead It's a recent brit-flick parody of Dawn of the Dead that's basically a romantic comedy. With Zombies. A RomComZom film. High recommended.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

"King of Hearts" (France) WWI movie where a British scout is sent into a French town the Germans have just evaculated. But the gates to the local asylum have swung open, and the loonies are now running the place.
"Ran" (Japan) I'm vote number three for this one. King Lear set in mideval Japan.
"Crouching Tiger; Hidden Dragon" [or something like that] (China)
"Das Boat" (German) How come no one's mentioned this one yet. C'mon!
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus
Hero impressed me, a bit like Crouching Tiger, but with a philosophical edge and possibly, even better fight scenes.
As people have said, La Vita e Belle is well worth a watch.
Amelie was great, moved my dad, though it has somewhat painful memories for me.
I'm a big fan of Akira, though being Anime it won't appeal to some. I grew up watching Anime (I mean from when I was 6 to about 10 it was all I watched).
Chocolat I loved, though I'm not sure if that counts as a foreign film.
I don't watch that much foreign film though, but would love to have advice of what to see too

Drogue, we live in England. Aside from the occassional Brit-flick like Trainspotting or Bridget Jones, all we watch are foreign films.

In serious movies , I'd say you watch the Apu trilogy by Satyajit Ray .
If you want to watch a movie which was and still is a classic since it was released many years ago , I'd say you watch the digitally remastered version of Sholay .
Lastly , most of the movies here are romantic flicks , so you won't be getting much if you watch too many .

True. I should have said 'foreign language films'

Just finished watching (literally 15 minutes ago) Cowboy Bebop: The Movie which is probably the most stylish animated feature I've ever seen, bar none. My is it well-illustrated. The story is not as brilliant as some other Japanese animation I've seen, but I've just gotta get hold of that TV series now that I've seen this.
One of my favourite films of all time is Picknick At Hanging Rock. Peter Weir is now a major hollywood director who mixes absolute dreck (Dead Poets Society, etc.) with incredibly deep films (Truman Show), but this australian debut is still his best I think. It's incredibly atmospheric despite almost nothing happening.
Francois Ozon is a french absurdist director in the school of Bunuel, and he's incredibly patchy. However, some of his films are incredibly intricate metacomical analyses of contemporary life/media... A recent favourite is Sitcom.
I hope you haven't caught Stephen Soderbergh's remake of Tarkovsky's Solaris, because it's crap and will probably spoil the original for you. The original is the Soviet answer to 2001 and in my opinion a much greater film, well worth getting hold of if you like atmosphere.
Most swedish films I love are (last time I checked) unavailable on DVD, so I'll refrain from recommending any.

I tried watching Swimming Pool, but with the lovely Ludivine Sagnier walking around more or less nude throughout the movie, it was difficult to focus on the plot
Apparently it takes a man of great concentration to see some of those French films. Or possibly a gay man, or both.

Hero is absolutely great movie, the crouching Tiger is a childish crap in comparison with Hero. It has such a great atmosphere. I just love it. The music-
