DU is toxic and it sucks, but the military doesn't have anything better. them's the breaks. now, if you get exposed to DU by climbing all over a tank that was destroyed by DU, it's your own damn fault. (should they post warnings? sure, why not? couldn't hurt. there will be people stupid enough to ignore them, and when they're exposed, it's even more their own damn fault.)
if you get fired upon by helicopter pilots during a wedding celebration because you're too dumb to realize that shooting a gun into the air as a noisemaker is utterly retarded, it's your own damn fault.

does this justify the use of DU? no, not really.

sure, i feel sorry for all of the unintended victims--and there are a lot of them--but if you read both sides of the story, you'll see that many of the people got exposed to the DU not by just merrily going on their way, but because they decided that the wheel on a destroyed tank looked nice and that they might as well use it.

i was explaining to sava why a chemical attack is worse than a DU shell, not whether or not DU shells were bad.

to explain further, for those of you who didn't get it the first time:

where DU shells are used, it's a war zone. you ought to know not to be around for the initial contamination. for the residual contamination, IT'S IN A GODDAMN WARZONE. you should have enough sense to avoid it unless you absolutely have to be back there. for the environmental contamination, well, there's no way around the fact that it sucks.

where gas attacks are used, it's a hell of a lot more random. you can use it on the battlefield, or you can use it as an urban terror attack, or you can use it for something else. no matter how much sense you have, it's hard to avoid, and if you do get mixed up in it, well, you're dead. the environmental contamination, well, it's pretty lousy too, but at least they have cleaning material for it--which, mind you, they could do something similar with the DU.

What counts an an unsupported assertion? I've seen those images before, they are documents of malformed still-births in the nations in question relating to reports of the effects of DU. It's like I show you a picture of a guy so covered in welts he looks like a red crocadile, and IO tell you 'This is a result of African Killer Bees in Southern Texas'. Would you throw a Right-wing hissy fit and tell me I'm stupid and that there's no proof bees did that? Of course not. The reason is that nobody would expect documents about AKBees to be political propaganda. Quite frankly I don't see why this should be seen as such. If Kerry or Clinton or whoever were President the Army would still be using this DU carp.

I think it should be a bi-partisan issue. There are plenty of soldiers facing carcenomas and deformed children in the next ten years who will probably vote Republican for the rest of their lives. There are plenty of civilians in nation that the US never has nor will go to war with, yet whose lives will still be blighted by the effects of having DU accumilate in their cattle and in their water-table etc. And the number of those nations will continue to grow (according to anonymous scientists somewhere) untill the fallout is pan-global.

I read all of what you wrote but found it only half made (kind of) any sense.

You seem to still be operating under the dillusion that DU dust keeps itself nicely tucked away on burned out tanks and such and doesn't wonder off in the breeze or anything at all. How descent and good of the DU to behave like that in your world. How civilised of it, how sporting.

Comment about the lower income folks was in the spirit of irony, I put it to you that that is in fact your attitude, or at least the position that you are representing with the statement I responded to. That anybody dumb enough to be present in a DU filled battlefield is just plain stupid. Grunts of any nation are rarely held as a priority outside of the politics games that elites play. Fact is most US soldiers are from poorer backgrounds looking to train/educate/opportunize themselves.

To the swaggering suited statesmen however, they are expendable, on the battle-field and in the political arena. That's why Gulf-War sickness for instance is still a non-issue as far as US and UK governments are concerned.

Just like DU shells actually, after the flash, the issue is forgotten, even though the damage rumbles on. For vets and DU dust alike.
