  • A difference like crushing or slaughtering...
    Either would do nicely thanks

Anyway, far from total destruction, decimate means 10% destruction. Yet another example of widespread misuse of a word. Or have I ranted about this before?
Not this particularly one that I recall. It has always puzzled me too frankly. But it was very easy for a word derived from latin to become corrupted when adopted into Anglo Saxon – the latter not being known primarily for their intellectual prowess.

It is always bad news when kids are diagnosed with serious illnesses – one feels for the Giffen and Gregan families.

I don’t think I have kept you updated on England injuries?

Lardy Thommo out with rib cartilage damage. Hill with his knee. And young Ollie Smith feels the injury curse again – in that dire match Saturday his did the AC joint in his shoulder and is out for six weeks.

This means a few things – but ther main ting is definitely that the England centre partnership looks likely to be Greenwood-Tindall again. Good news for Eddie that – Greenwood is not in form (bang-bang Tindall is playing well however).

Result of the citings you kindly posted Finbar:

Martin Corry – two week suspension for stamping. Pleaded guilty. Back in time for the internationals.

George Chuter – six week suspension. Pleaded not guilty. Out until December.

For Tigers this means Jonno junior moving to eight for the games against Calvisano and the away game with Biarritz Olympique. And the hooker will either be our England U21 lad Buckland – or the Tongan signing from the summer who I have yet to see at the ground!

I think the problem with the word - and a wonderfully melifluous word it is - is that it sounds like a word that befits total destruction. Or maybe you're right - people are just thickheads.

I don’t think I have kept you updated on England injuries?
I've been keeping a careful eye on the mounting toll. You won't miss Lard Arse. I'm sure the lineout is sighing with relief. You might even find one who can throw.

Did they call you to put your passionate defence of them? Hangman Havak.

or the Tongan signing from the summer who I have yet to see at the ground!
Sunning himself at Bognor Regis, no doubt. I love that name. I truly love it.

I don't care! I'll continue to rant about it until les mecs stop misusing the word!

It's interesting to note that my French dictionary from my school days and my Petit Ophrys have different translations for the word.

Keep the definition of your school days dictionary in your case...

And how I wish I'd had that expression in my French dictionary in my school days!

I use this as a general rule of thumb and am seldom disappointed.

You might even find one who can throw.
There are four hookers in the Elite squad. Thommo out injured and Chuter suspended leaves Regan and Titterall. Titters is a pretty good line out thrower. Robinson coached Regan at Bath. Make you own guess who will play.

Regan’s continued presence in the squad amazes me – he is nothing more than an average club player.

                Hangman Havak.
The only problem is it is the disciplinary panel I wish to hang.

Very…English. Only an English town would hold on to a royal affirmation centuries after the last royal patronised the town. And I like that word ‘patronised’ as it pretty nicely sums up Elizabeth Saxo-Coburg-Gotha’s relationship with her ‘subjects’.

Daring to drag us back towards rugger topics – Moody makes his first team starting line up return against Calvisano. How I and England are hoping he stays fit and regains form quickly. A genuine seven for the internationals would be nice.

                • Robinson must be starting to think God hates him.

Rumours are rife that Wilko is out of the Internationals (haematoma in the arm).

The BBC, god bless em, report Tindall or Borthwick to be lined up as skipper. Hmm - if you say so Auntie but what about Jason Robinson who, unlike those two, actually skippers his club side?

Plus of course Borthwick does not deserve an England berth for my money anyway.

Is he the one who played out here? He did all right. At least he can throw.

A fit fly half wouldn't hurt either. Wilkinson is injured again?

I notice Clive has picked a management team for the Lions tour that will outnumber the player squad.

Something odd happened to the board last night. This post of yours wasn't appearing last night when I posted at around 11.30pm my time. The last post appearing before I posted was your one from a couple of hours earlier. But here it is this morning. Most odd.

Anyway. It now seems official that Wilkinson is out. Talk about a jinx. Talk about a shame, too. Everyone wants to see the best players running around. Sounds like they'll be scratching for a skipper.

And I read this morning that coach Robinson is planning a "warm up" match against the England L***** team! Presumably he's after a confidence booster. But surely he can't be serious ...

Yes that’s him. And yes he can throw – shame about the rest of his game.

I notice Clive has picked a management team for the Lions tour that will outnumber the player squad.
He is a manager – that is what he does. He figures if he takes enough they might form a human wall against Kiwi TV spies?

I notice they are taking a lawyer as part of that team! Learnt from the VD and Dawson experience in 2001 I think.

What worries me is that a Haematoma in the arm should not be preventing a 25 year old playing. Something else is going on methinks.

Three years ago I thought Hodgson might make the grade – on the summer tour he blew that misconception away. AWOL in defence with little other than a good boot going forward. I am hoping against hope Robinson picks Broadfoot (no real chance but I can hope).

The captaincy could be disasterous – I nearly choked when the Beeb tipped Borthwick.

Can you link me to that report on the game against the L***** tarts? I can’t find any reporting of it here.

Oh yes – remember Zinny and his increasingly tenuous grip on reality? Please check out his latest column Finbar.

Lawyers, butchers, bakers, feng shui experts, and, I notice, some people who can, apparently, actually coach a bit. Tosser.

A haemoatoma's only a deep-seated bruise, isn't it? You reckon maybe it's the original problem flared again?

It was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald this morning. Although I might have misread practice as match. Regardless ...

Why not? It's been a crap day, might as well ruin it completely.

EDIT. Okay, I read Zinzan's latest pile of drivel. I was almost prepared to forgive him on the basis that he's an utter idiot. Until I got to the end bit where he said he rated Toulouse. That's it. I'm applying to have him certified.

McGeechan, who looks likely to helm the ‘mid-weekers’ is one hell of a nice bloke and I think probably the better coach too. If only he hadn’t turned down the 2001 job (to coach Scotland – tosser!) he might still be main man now.

You reckon maybe it's the original problem flared again?
Let me put it this way – I don’t think we are being told the whole truth. A deep seated bruise it is – and that should not stop a player in mid twenties playing. I almost suspect they don’t want golden boys captaincy tainted by starting with three big losses skippering a scratch side.

If they do choose Borthwick it will achieve the impossible – make me nostalgic for Dayglo as skipper.

I can buy the training session with L***** boys – it can really help defensive workouts. The match concept struck a wrong note. The RFU tried this type of bridge building things in the late 90s but it went badly wrong (most League players have played the superior Union code – not so the other way around).

Until I got to the end bit where he said he rated Toulouse. That's it. I'm applying to have him certified.
I have to say I am hugely surprised at you. For passing on his raking up of the Toulouse fullbacks moment of madness last year.

And remind me – what sides dod he pick for the English league title and European cup win? Is it the kiss of death I wonder?
