A little exercise of translation now, not from French to English, but from front-rower to English:

remarkably brave for a scrummie

If this has been said by a prop, then how would you translate it into common English? Advanced exercise: Do the same but translate scrummy with no more than five or six bad sounding words.

As a super advanced exercise, I'll translate it into Australian as spoken by an Australian prop: "Gutless little woolly woofter".

Ah, dear old Frank Zappa. Years ahead of his time. Have you listened to much of his stuff? I think I still have, somewhere deep in my record cupboard, his very early 70s album satire of "Sergeant Peppers". Called "We're Only In It For The Money". Its cover is a stunning satire of the "Peppers" cover. I must see if I can find it.

Unfortunately I don't know very well Frank Zappa, I have seen a few of his outstanding live performances and heard a few of his tunes but I don't own any record. Though he was certainly one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century most of his records are nevertheless a bit too "weird" for me.

His guitar solos in GFR's "Out to get you" (Good Singin', Good Playin') are a real gem.

In spite of an undeserved defeat against the Association Sportive Montferrandaise, the Stade Toulousain is now first of the French Championship thanks to a heavy defeat away from home of the Union Sportive des Harlequins de Perpignan.

Against the ASM the referee thus validated a try in spite of an obvious fool from the Montferrandais, this makes a huge difference knowing that the final score was 26-22 in favor of the ASM.

One would rightfully reply that it compensates the undeserved victory at home against the Biarritz Olympique though.

He was a very gifted musician, a fact lost on a lot of people who couldn't get past some of his musical excesses. I still think his "Weasels Rip My Flesh" album has one of the great album titles of all time.

Look on the bright side. Leicester fell over the line against the bottom team in a game that, according to reports, set rugby back three decades.

It was actually said by a Flanker (loose forward if you prefer) and the loose translation would be "OK in the scrap for an effing girlie".

A brilliant French coach used to say that bad weather and/or rain was only an excuse for not playing an offensive game...

Now that I'm on the Calvisano bandwagon, the word massacre springs to mind. The word decimate won't spring to mind. Why do people use the word decimate as a synonym for total destruction? Decimate means, literally, one in ten killed. From memory, it derives from the Roman method of maintaining discipline within the legion ranks. One in ten of the men were singled out and killed. The ranks did the singling out and the killing.

Les Bleus could do with that sort of discipline, methinks.

Anyway, far from total destruction, decimate means 10% destruction. Yet another example of widespread misuse of a word. Or have I ranted about this before?

Chris Whitaker out of the touring team with a leg injury. Matt Henjak gets his chance. He will leave 'Quins early to join the squad. George Gregan might not leave with the party. His very young son has just been diagnosed with epilepsy. It hasn't been a good time for Wallaby children. David Giffin, who was going to tour as lineout coach, pulled out when his child was diagnosed with cancer.
