  • Vyv off of The Young Ones had a thing called "I'm fat and it's grate."

He had a list of things that fat people can do that skinnies can't.

My favourite was, "draw a line down the middle of your tum and pretend it's your arse."

I'm thinner than I was when you saw me. I think I was only halfway through my weight loss.

But now I have a job with free food I'm putting on weight again . I just weighed myself. I'm 138 now.

        • In the european 8% of the health care budget is spent on obesity-related illnesses, which amounts to about €42 billion. The Americans do even better with something of a $118 billion. How can any fat person say I weigh a ton and I don't give a damn about it. There are nutcases that grow so fat they can't even more anymore by themselves and have to be helped by others to do the even most menial of tasks. They're expecting other people to just help them and feed them. Now that is pure decadence...

Of course most overweight people are not that extreme, but still for those really obese people there should be some compulsory diet, though that's probably impossible to carry out.

It doesn't help either that there is one third more obese children than just 20 years ago! Sounds like a real problem to me and it all comes down on our way of living. We really need to stop mass-producing factory meat that we eat in hamburgers etc.
It's one of the reasons why I'm a vegetarian, but it would take too long to explain all about it

          • I've been thinking about this, and even though I have libertarian tendencies. I like to think: what's fair is fair.

I get upset that my money is subsidizing bad behaviour. I'm tired of paying the same amount for insurance as fat people and smokers. they should pay more and I should pay less!

I don't see how this is intrusive. Car insurance companies use risk assessment for determining insurance rates. Why not health insurance?

                • Factors Affecting Metabolism In Order Of Greatest Impact To Least:

                  Muscle tissue
Meal frequency (the longer you go between meals the more your metabolism slows down to conserve energy)
                  Activity level
Food choices (ex. low-fat diets tend to result in poor hormone production which leads to a slower metabolism)
Hydration (over 70% of bodily functions take place in water – not enough water causes all your systems to slow down and unnecessary stress)
Genetics (I personally think this is bollocks)
Hormone production and function (think you have a slow thyroid? it’s not likely – before you go blame it on the thyroid first stabilize your blood sugar and throw in some progressive exercise 2-3 times each week)
Stress (stress also can slow metabolism by placing extra stress and strain on numerous systems. plus, many people tend to overeat when “stressed out”)

                    I love this one.

I don't believe half of those. Sorry.

It seems that quite a few people do think there is a link between genes and obesity. Admittedly most of the experimental work has been done on rodents but they are mammals and not that dissimilar to humans for gene and hormone functions.

Scientists have used gene therapy to transform fat-storing cells into fat-burning cells

They injected the rats with a virus containing the leptin gene. The rats decreased in weight from an average of 280 grams to 207 grams in 14 days.

They also ate 30% less food, but remained healthy and active.

The gene, GAD2, increases production of a chemical which boosts the appetite.

The genetic mutations in the three disorders mean that a protein called Sar1b, which is required for all dietary fat absorption, cannot work properly.

Scientists have found that men with a certain gene variation have a tendency to get a flabby stomach.

Mice genetically altered so they produced neither the enzyme, called SCD-1, or leptin, were, they said "markedly less obese" than the "normal" obese mice.

Two researchers from Harvard University found that a gene called PPARgamma appears to play a vital role in creating new fat cells, or adipocytes.

An obesity gene which could pass from father to child has been discovered by scientists in Paris.

Having said that I am markedly unsympathetic to the fat gits in society. Exercise more and eat less. However it is all symptomatic of an increasing tendency to refuse to accept responsibility for one's own actions and to expect other people to pick up the tab when something forseeable and preventable happens.

                        • OK, if genetics do play a part (and I'm sceptical) there are many other more important factors.

And there are ways to boost your own leptin level naturally anyway.

What we do inherit is a desire to overeat. Some people have more discipline than others.
