3% of US population behind bars, on parole or on probation last year
Well you don't have an ex-slave population which accounts for 12% of your population and 48% of your murders either.
I agree with the gist of what you're saying, but must point out that none of these people are ex-slaves. Neither did they suffer under Jim Crow and segregation in Detroit and Philadelphia. But, alas, in DC we are only 35 years removed from Jim Crow and segregation. Parts of DC are just getting out from under the 60s race riots.
the sad thing is, the middle class that you are referring to has little to fear from poor criminals... the poor are too busy robbing and killing the poor.
This isn't strictly true. Those who are middle class who own property in the city suffer disproportionately from criminals because criminal violence impacts property values so much. All it takes is one crack house on the block and millions of dollars in property value is flushed down the tubes.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Some how though, poverty has resulted in gangs shooting each other though.

I could take you to parts of rural southeast Ohio that would make the ghetto look like Shangri-la with regard to material possessions. They have lots of guns there, but few to no murders. I don't buy the simple equation of poverty leading to violence.
On the other hand, I think it's obvious that giving people jobs makes them physically much less available to the criminal elements.

I would have to say that there is so much cruelty and brutality in Australia's early history that it probably influenced attitudes even to this day. There is a real revulsion to prisons here. We had enough and looked for a better way.
And our prisons are still terrible, grim places - as bad any in the Western world. No holiday at all. Not much reform.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

What do you think is the cause then?

Lots of causes and some I'm sure that haven't been identified. How could you reduce it to something that would fit into an Apolyton thread?

3% is WAY too high. See, we need the death penalty! Get those numbers down fast...
We whack 2 of those three percent and there will only be 1% left. Now that's a gaol worth having...
What's the current US population? 250 million? so you are talking about executing 5 million people?

Poverty certainly has to be in the mix. Sure there are poor neighborhoods where there are no gangs shooting each other, but there could very well be something else that is working together with poverty to cause gang violence in the inner cities. Maybe it's the cities, because living in a rural setting seems to prevent this.

We have gun control but I could go and buy a firearm today no problem and hardened crims can still get them easily. Handguns however are hard to get and violent crims tend to use shortened shotguns and rifles rather than hand guns. This helps the cops because you don't shorten a rifle to go hunting - so if you are caught with such a weapon, again, you will almost certainly go to gaol just for possessing such a weapon.
Do Americans use handguns for hunting?
The place started out as a pretty grim dumping ground for criminals, most them of a petty nature like stealing bread or a handkerchief (a very common crime leading to transportation). Australia was one big prison farm.
Did anyone ever do a cost-benefit analysis of that one?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

I know some people who do hunt with handguns. However, these are usually higher caliber magnum revolvers, instead of high capacity automatics in 9mm or .40sw.
Strange, we have all three and our neighborhood isn't ruined.
Fine. Mix those 3 with a poor neighborhood and see what happens.
Or take those 3 away from a middle class neighborhood and watch the neighborhood improve.
