When I visited SK in 1989 I was told that I could get a leather jacket for $15. I couldn't find anyone to sell one to me for less than $75. Then I had a taxi cab driver go in there and buy one for $20, and I gave him $5. I got a bad taste in my mouth about that place.
dude, you're probably very not-asian looking. the vendors smelled tourist blood.
Of course. They knew I was US military.
The vendors formed a huge cartel that amazingly held together, and none of them would budge when they could have made a great deal of profit in doing so. Must be a cultural thing.

paiktis, you have no idea what you're talking about in relation to skorea.
granted, this doesn't stop other posters on this forum from saying **** about ****, but i'd just like to point that out.
The so called "fascists" of South Korea's Junta is why South Korea is not a third world ****hole today. South Korea was traditionally the poorer part of the pennisula , and after the Korean War was left completely devestated. The South Korean regime was able to do one of the great modern economic miracles and industrialized South Korea from practically nothing.
southern korea was the breadbasket, northern korea was the rustbelt.
besides, as much as skoreans hated the dictatorship, one needs to look no further than the love-hate relationship they have for the dictator that started the rocketing growth, PARK chung-hee.
You haven't listened to k-pop have you?

USA supported the fascists (so they hate you) and communists supported the communists
so USA, fascists = the same
oppresor communists = opressor fascists/USA
OK, while supporting the military dictatorship is something that is definately not to the US's credit, saying that that is the reason for anti-Americanism in Korea is profoundly ignorant. Of all the complaints I've heard about America in the last year not ONE has even so much as mentioned the military dictatorship.
And, sadly enough, the military dictatorship isn't nearly as unpopular as you think, the daughter of one of the old dictators is now head of the main opposition party and the main reason that she's head of it is because of the continued popularity of her father across much of the country.
In fact I think all your arguments are merely projecting Greece's experience on Korea, rather than any knowledge you may have.
I asked my gf (the paragon of beauty and reason that she is) why many Koreans are anti-American and she said:
So Korean are jealous of power. I think we are a weak country, we need you're country's help actually.
Everyone doesn't like Bush, so maybe we don't like America. Especially after there was a Korean victim in the Iraq War.
No mention of the old military dictatorship, when I asked her about that specifically, she said "maybe a little bit."
the fact that they progressed is because they got rid of the american bakced fascists and the americans?
You don't know even the basics of Korean history, do you?
Of course. They knew I was US military.
Where were you shopping? Please please don't tell me it was Itaewon, that's just asking to get ripped off.

Bargaining works just fine on the veggie-venders in the market where I shop.

Well there was one girl group I saw performing while flipping through the channels and they weren't even bothering lip-syncing

Just look at how prosperous South Korea compared with complete destitution of the North, and only a fool would claim the South would be better off without our presence in the area.
Since Vietnam has been moderating since the 1980's, there's no reason to believe that Korea wouldn't, if the North had won.

We might have a naval base in Vietnam before long, believe it or not. The US is very popular among the people there.
We're the most popular in the countries that we've blown the **** out of or helped blow the **** out of.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

So because the South refused to let itself be conquered and oppressed, it's their fault that NK sucks so bad?
You made a mistake.
It was the US that propped up a bloodthirsty, murderous puppet regime in South Korea.

As opposed to allowing a far more bloodthirsty, murderous puppet regime from the other superpower (which incidentally was also murderous, if not necessarily bloodthirsty) to take control?
