Maybe it is to prevent certain polling stations from being incredibly overcrowded.

We have a central database. It is a big book with everyone's name in it.
Assigning people to polling stations is daft. Why make it harder for people to vote, given the low turnouts?
I don't know how it's done in NZ, but here in the US there are a lot of city, county, and even district-centric votes that ride along with the national elections. Ergo, assigned polling stations.
How the seats would look with complete proportional representation:
Liberal: 113
Conservative: 91
NDP: 48
Bloc: 38
Green: 13
Christain Heritage: 1
Marijuana Party: 1
Progressive: 1
Marxist-Leninist: 1
Independant: 1 (Although i guess that since that's a collective number of many individual riders, unless any one of them got higher than 0.066% of the vote individually I suppose it would go to Canada Action instead)

Man, the MLs beat the Communists again. Hmmphh.
By almost twice the votes, I think.
By the way, the name of my local ML candidate is "Dave Starbuck"
His platform is pretty decent, though. Infact he's the only local candidate I read up on that actually had any sort of objective and wasn't just bull****ing or saying the party line.
Possible in some areas, I guess. In the area of Ohio where I grew up (rural), the following are up for election this go around:
POTUS
US Senator
US Representative
State Senator
State Representative
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio
Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio (4)
District Court of Appeals Judge (2)
County Commissioner (2)
County Treasurer
County Recorder
County Prosecutor
County Clerk of Courts
County Coroner
County Engineer
County Common Pleas Judge
.5 mill county "Meals on Wheels" tax levy
.5 mill county roads and highway construction tax levy
.5 mill county library operations tax levy
.5 mill county historical/parks operations tax levy
Kroger's Sunday sale of wine and mixed beverages question
Village Mayor
Village Clerk
Village Council (5)
Township Trustee (3)
Township Clerk
School district school Board (5) (in my case there are 3 townships that make up the school district; there aren't any add'l school funding requests this go around, but those require levy votes as well)
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
Man, I still wonder how some states have elections for judges. That just seems so WRONG to me. Maybe it is because we didn't have it in Jersey, but the possibilities for corruption are ripe!
Also I never liked voting for County Sheriff, etc.
