Flubber, I like Newfies. I'm just having a bit of fun. Feel free to call Quebecers whatever you want.

FYI, the smartest math prof I ever had was a Newf. He was also an alcoholic and cocaine user, but whatever...

Being "least offensive" is really not what should be deciding your vote. If that where the case for me, I certainly would not vote. There's no way in hell I'm going to offer support to a party that I disagree with, even if I disagree with it 'less' than other's running. What the hell kind of qualification is that for leading the country?

You can spoil your ballot. That way at least you're counted and the pols know a larger number of people are paying attention.

I guess I didn't know too much about Canada afterall... two words come in mind for me every election.. republicans, democrats..
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

They're all equally offensive to me in different ways.

Do I value having a good economy over having the right to legally marry?
Do I value having a potentially corrupt party over a party who claims to no longer be corrupt?

Either way it's a **** choice. And in the end, I couldn't care less which one gets elected.

I figured those messages would flush you out of the woodwork.

I'll second KH's last post. I have yet to meet an unfriendly Newfoundlander and the best looking women in my Master's programme were from the rock, which partially explains we ended up a cod as our class emblem.

As for Asher, I don't blame him for not voting. I can't see him voting for the anti-gay Conservatives. He sure the hell isn't about to vote for the Liberals and I haven't yet converted him to the NDP.

Don't know what I'd do if I was in his shoes.

Edit: But here's one idea. Write a letter to Harper and tell him why you didn't vote Conservative. One letter won't change their policies, but it has more impact then not doing anything.

But as Election Canada is telling people: Don't eat your ballot!

"Eating a ballot, not returning it or otherwise destroying or defacing it constitutes a serious breach of the Canada Elections Act," Elections Canada warns on its website.

Three Alberta men were charged during the 2000 federal election with eating their paper ballots. The men said they were members of the Edible Ballot Society and were protesting against what they said was a lack of real choice among candidates.

While I doubt they are all EQUALLY offensive to you ( and you haven't mentioned the particular candidates) thats your choice and your decision. The beauty of freedom to vote is also that you have freedom not to vote. My opinion that everyone should vote is just that, an opinion.

That said, if I were in Asher's position, I don't know how you could decide. Probably go for the best candidate irrespective of party stripe and then join the Consrvative party and try to change their views on homosexual marriage

All of the candidates are the same slimey politicians that I hate to begin with, so I don't want to vote for individuals either.

Well I don't drop in much anymore but on election day I figured I would see what people are saying

Its more as small town thing than anything. Everbody knows everything about everyone else so its a transition to get accustomed to the idea that you don't say "hi" to folks

Women . . . The export of a lot of the young men to Alberta and Ontario ( in greater numbers than the women it seems) has led to a nice ratio of available women to available men

I agree with that assessment. The old PC's probably better fit Asher's politics as they were less "right" on social issues

ah-- go all the way and join the party -- Organize enough to take over an entire riding association and then run an openly gay candidate as a conservative. The party would explode and voters would be confused as they thought by definition, an openly gay candidate must be from the NDP

Maybe in 5 years I should run as an openly gay conservative candidate.

Why not. There's an NDP candidate in Newfoundland who is anti-abortion. And according to the Star, he has a chance of winning.

I got a snippet of that from a web search but they want a credit card number ( no way !!) before I see the whole story.

An NDP win in a federal general election has never happened in NL IIRC. It was two separate byelection wins .. . But the party has never been stronger provincially -- TWO seats and with disaffection for the Librals and distrust of leadership in tradiditional Tory strongholds .. . well who knows??
