I recently got a dog from a rescue organization which specializes in taking dogs out of high-kill shelters in the South (my dog hails from TN).

I think one possible solution would be stricter laws requiring people to neuter their dogs. If you want to become a breeder, make it require a license and make getting that license require time & money (classes, perhaps). In fact, make getting a dog more difficult. In order to adopt Toby, my girlfriend and I:

    1) filled out an extensive application
    2) had a telephone interview
    3) had a home visit/interview
    4) Paid a total of $250

    This process took months.

Anyway, it's human stupidity/*******ry that is responsible for thousands and thousands of animals being in shelters. As if it's THEIR fault.

it wouldn't be based on weight... thin hummer drivers should be euthanized too. my bad for not being clear on what would consitute "kill worthy".

I'm surprised you didn't take this opportunity to praise Sava for his Michael Moore-killing policy

Did you even read the story you posted? He is repealing a law that requires shelters to keep animals for 6 days before putting them down. Shelters will now be free to decide for themselves which animals should be put down first, and which are more adoptable. What is the point of forcing them to keep animals that they know won't be adopted? That's just a waste of money.

I was still recovering from the shock of how many people Sava had decided should die.

No-Kill shelters. I am against animals rights, but that doesn't mean we should be cruel to animals.

In our city, they're building an enormous spacious center for stray animals, that will be taken care of. ( no, not that kind of "taken care of" )

Apparently keeping them in a cage for a while first is "more humane".

6 days isn't exactly a long time, Cali. The law wasn't very strict in the first place. Now it's down to 3 days. 3 days? That's nothing.

Whatever. I'm not pissed an Arnold so much as the situation in general. A situation he is not helping. If he wanted to help it, he could take some proactive steps to get at the problem at the front end.

IMO there shouldn't be a time limit at all. Let the shelters decide for themselves.

I'm sure there are plenty of other things that could be done to help the problem, but that doesn't mean the effort he has made in this instance is a bad thing. He's looking to cut wasteful spending, and repealing this law does just that.

No-kill shelters don't mean the animal doesn't get put to sleep. It means they don't do the killing. If they have an animal for a while or it's clearly not adoptable, it goes to the humane society to get put down.
