    • I bow to the spelling nazi. Would you care to tell me how this is anything more than a triffling annoyance?

        • I simply found it amusing to point out something so trifling with respect to a phrase like "de minimis"...

                      • Although I don't agree it's so trifling as to not be worthy of a court's attention, I do think that it was pretty much tilting at windmills on Newdow's part.

Congress as representatives of the people can decide to put God in the pledge if they want. A majority of Americans do want God in the pledge so Congress must honor those wishes.
Congress gets it's authority to act from the Constitution, not the majority. So where in the Constitution does it say Congress has the power to be involved with schools? And where in the Constitution does it say Congress can ask children to pledge allegiance to the God of Congress? I've been asking these questions and no one has answered.

The problem with Newdow is that he thinks the minority has a right to force their views on the majority. He does not believe in God so he thinks nobody should.
How is he forcing his views on the majority? He doesn't want the majority asking his daughter to pledge allegiance to their God - man you guys keep getting it backwards. If y'all want your kids to attend government schools and recite the pledge, STOP using other people's taxdollars to promote your religion. And when did he say no one should or can believe in God? He just wants ya'll to mind your own business and leave him and his family out of your religion.

                          Elok -
No, you can disagree with me, it's just that the constitution protects human citizens, not whiny little douchebags from planet wazzlebooble like Newdow.
Why are so many on your side so nasty? I've seen Newdow several times and he's always well-mannered and doesn't call people names, but even here at Poly we see some of you acting like "iceholes". I think that puts to rest the absurd notion that the pledge is not coercive, we can see how many "God-fearing" people react to atheists. Of course, that's when we hear it's not atheists y'all despise, it's the atheists who don't want the state using their money to promote your religion.

Like I said, I agree with you in principle...if it comes to that, I formally disagree with police brutality, but I'd pay to watch the cops whale on Carrot Top.

Is it any wonder why some on the left refer to the "religious right" as the Taliban wing of the Republican party? They aren't all that far off with that assessment. Y'all share the notion that the rest of us exist to be converted and punished for non-compliance.

                          • Uh, I'm not *on* the religious right. Politically I'm more or less moderate (aside from abortion I'm liberal), and I refuse to have anything to do with the Christian Coalition. Thing is, the man has only partial custody, the ex-wife who has majority custody is for the pledge, and the daughter wanted nothing to do with this. Maybe he talks nice but his actions say pretentious weinerhead. And I was exaggerating for comic effect (yes, I know it wasn't that funny, sue me), so don't go all Bloom on me. By the way, my dad is agnostic-leaning-towards-atheist. We get along fine. I have no intention of "punishing him for non-compliance."

And I'm not sure how much tax money is spent on reciting two words of the pledge of allegiance over loudspeaker anyway.

You've already said you agree in principle but just hate Newdow leaving us to ask who could possibly sue on this issue without attracting your ire. My last response to you ended with

Maybe he talks nice but his actions say pretentious weinerhead.
Based on what? The fact he sued? If your rights are violated and you sue, are you guilty of what you accuse him of being?

And I'm not sure how much tax money is spent on reciting two words of the pledge of allegiance over loudspeaker anyway.
It's not about the time or money it takes to say 2 words everyday, it's about forcing non-believers to fund the coerced proselytisation of their own children by believers. If you still can't see that after this thread, well, I can lead a horse to water, but...
