        • Gorbachev, Walsea, and the pope did much more to end the Cold war than Raygun ever did. If it wsn't for the '91 coup, Russia would be a social democracy today (like Sweden) , without the rapid privitization killed Russian living standards, and that is because Reagan's outspending of the USSR caused the '91 coup and the rise of Yeltsin. Gorbachev taking on the hardliners in his own party makes him more of a hero than Reagan was.

          • "Reagan was a statesman who, despite all disagreements that existed between our countries at the time, displayed foresight and determination to meet our proposals halfway and change our relations for the better, stop the nuclear race, start scrapping nuclear weapons, and arrange normal relations between our countries," Gorbachev said.

"I do not know how other statesmen would have acted at that moment, because the situation was too difficult. Reagan, whom many considered extremely rightist, dared to make these steps, and this is his most important deed," the former Soviet leader was quoted as saying.
Feel free to argue it out with Gorbachev.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

            • by the dumb, reagan will be remembered as a great american hero who defeated communism and blah blah blah...

the smart will remember reagan as a below-average leader, probably in the early stages of alzheimers, whose economic policies benefitted the super rich and corporations while leaving everyone else behind... and shifted the tax burden from the rich to a more regressive system (including the creation of the payroll tax for SS... the most regressive federal tax). The "legacy" of his foreign policy, we are still dealing with today... when (if rather) the war on terrorism is over, the smart will look back and see how reagan created many problems with his support of the Afghans. Not to mention the support of brutal dictator Saddam Hussein and the deaths of hundreds of thousands, probably over a million; that were the byproduct of reagan's foreign policy.

True (probably smart) conservatives will look back at the reagan era as government grew without limit and spending skyrocketed as the fiscally irresponsible reagan spent America's hard earned money like a mentally defective alzheimer's patient would.
To us, it is the BEAST.

              • Sava, most of your posts aren't worth my (or anyones) time, as you yourself admit, but seriously... do you really expect anyone to believe the following?

(including the creation of the payroll tax for SS... the most regressive federal tax)

FWIW, the payroll tax for SS was instituted in 1937. 1981-1937=44.

The "legacy" of his foreign policy, we are still dealing with today... when (if rather) the war on terrorism is over, the smart will look back and see how reagan created many problems with his support of the Afghans.

Actually, he was just following the Carter policy. Blame James Earl for initially throwing the US's support behind the Afghans fighting against the invading Soviet Union, OK?

                  • Sava's condemnation of Reagan is the best endorsement for the former president, at least that I can think of.

                      • Reagan was a democrat until something like 1962.
Don't know if that's been noted or not.

                            • His famed "Star Wars" program drew the Soviets into a costly arms race it couldn't afford. His 1987 declaration to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at the Berlin Wall — "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" — was the ultimate challenge of the Cold War.
