What do you expect, with those clowns we have in charge?

      What, the German voters?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The voters aren't in charge. I thought I wouldn't have to explain this to you. They have the chance to vote once in 4 years and the duty to keep quiet inbetween. Besides, the bulk of them are just the same Joe Sixpacks as the American voters.

Japher: This worked always a charm. Unfortunately, the times have changed. So we may never find out of that depression, even more since the performance of the conservatives in the early 90's wasn't much better.

You guys were experiencing the second recession dip when you returned these jokers to office. Listen to me as I play the world's smallest violin for the German voter.

DanS, what would you've done, if you were the German economic leadership?

And my question about what to do with the increased tax revenues remains.

You know, sometimes I despair of the German political state of mind.

Reform the labor system, so that German companies aren't so hesitant to fire and hire.

What are the regulations right now? It's not certain that this will help. ( I want to compare with ours ).

How about moving government from unemployment to infrastructure? I've heard unemployment welfare is ridiculous over there....

You are so much more enjoyable to read if you're not trolling. I actually had a pretty high opinion of you. Your snooty remarks have damaged that somewhat.

This is the right way without any doubt, and everybody in Germany knows this, including those in power. Unfortunately they can't do it, and your favored conservatives can't do it either. Or why is it, that they failed to get this reform running in the 16 years they were in power before 1998, even though everybody's talking about it for a decade?

There are two main obstacles. The first one are the allmighty unions. Their spine has to be broken first, or else nobody would be able to do anything what would hurt the workers. But no party can afford to do it, without having to fear a huge backleash. The second is the democracy itself. Our second chamber, Bundesrat, is usually packed with an overweight of the opposition. This was the case in the 90's (CDU in power, SPD dominated Bundesrat) as well as it is now (vice versa). Unfortunately, culture among German politicians is not to do what's best for the country, but only what's best for themselves, and so the opposition in the second chamber is mostly blocking what the government tries to do. A lot of things blocked by the CDU in Bundesrat right now, was initiated by it in the first place.

To be fair to the CDU, the German economy wasn't in line for a triple dip recession.

That's why I sometimes despair of the German political state of mind. Everybody agrees that this is one of the main problems, but y'all do nothing about it because you believe you can do nothing about it. You trot out a load of tired "sophisticated" reasons why the voters can do nothing about it, absolving them of their democratic duties.

Just vote the bastards out! If the CDU can't or won't do something about it, then vote them out also.

So did we 1998, after they did nothing substantial in 16 years. The SPD can't do it either, as clearly visible. Who's remaining? The Greens? Don't get me started with these clowns! The Liberals? Can be happy to jump over 5%, and are more busy to spawn scandals and to ***** in talkshows. There's no Hitler in sight, too. So for whom shall we vote?
